On singing His praises

Raag Sarang

Guru Arjan Dev

ਰਵਣ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕਰਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਜੋਇ

Ravan Gun Gopaal Karathae Naanakaa Sach Joe

रवण गुण गोपाल करते नानका सचु जोइ

Chanting the Glorious Praises of the Creator, the Lord of the Universe - O Nanak, this is Truth.

One is just left speechless, with the simple sweet words of Dhan Guru Sachay Patshah Arjun Dev Maharaj. So much depth, so much gyan, so much love, so much of blessings ....

And we moorakhs are discussing on His infinite Glory?

That is surely because we are not yet absorbed in His dhyan, otherwise, what difference does it make, about how and who sings His Glory....is it not me, you, he, she , we , they....are all His children?

If He does not stop us from loving Him, why should we feel jealous, and quarrel with our brothers, when they only sing His Glory, out of their love and devotion for Him.

Is He not the same Father mentioned by all of us? Whether we call Him: Wahiguru, Akal Purukh, Har, Hari, Gobind, Satnam ....or so many other names, mentioned in the Bani...

Different names given to Him, by His Gurmukhs, or Guru sahibans, does not change His nature...He alone He is. So then why so much disharmony?

Or is that by using these His names, we are referring to any other authority than Him?

Let us leave aside all our egos and jealousies, our moorakhta down, and ignite real love and devotion in our hearts at His Lotus feet, with the help of the Bani.

At least, I have no problem with anybody, because he/she/they and all, are also His very children just as I am, so then with whom to quarrel?

And what for?

There is no sense.

If someone thinks he / she is a better lover and gyani than this das or even others on this web-forum, then real mubaarak to him, may he still go forward and flourish his mind with His love, even more...

Waheguru Jee

One interesting discussion. both balbir and harsharan along those that supported him with post are airing different views, balbir is more right than harsharan. Guru sahib did not just choose any word for Vaheguru at random to say call Vaheguru whatever. Using different names for Vaheguru in different places in Gurbani brings out meaning and replacing that specific name for Vaheguru will not be appropriate to understand the shabad.

Example can we change ik onkar to Vaheguru in Mool Mantar? It is a dangerous path that many will not take because they have no authority to change Gurbani. Many times people that follow so called Babas or Sants will have no problem doing this to justify their worship of their Baba as Vaheguru. Also the so called educated class of people travel on the same path to bring Gurbani down to their understanding abilities and live in metaphors and ultimately Vaheguru does not exist for them but is a metaphor. Then you have those who take it so literal that they completely miss the meaning and start following ideas like Krishna is worshipped in Gurbani.

Idea of Sikhi is not to love people but to submit to Vaheguru's hukam whatever that would be. If loving people equally was the goal then atheist who dedicated their whole life toward serving the less fortunate would be teaching Sikhi not Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Take the example God is testing me? God knows everything before it happens. He knows the choice before it is made by the puppet? Where is the test in it? What we have is circumstantial intelligence. Divine knowledge is beyond our grasp. How many people are aware of Gurbani, yet are lost, me included in this list. Vaheguru can be sitting before us and we will deny it because of the minds ability to create distractions for us. The more a person is given the ability to contemplate over Gurbani by Vaheguru the more they will agree with Hukam is the goal. In this there is no attachments to anything in creation. Everything exist as is with no feelings toward it. Its complete surrender no praise no disagreements. Budhist try to practice this but they do not have a true teacher to receive the teachings from.

Raj karega khalsa. Uttered by Guru Nanak but not understood by us. When this was said. It wad not said by wish full thinking. But exposing what will happen. Guru Nanak Dev ji did not force this on the world. However many Sikhs are trying to force this on others through different ways. Guru Nanak Dev jis way is through teaching and if the the person does not accept. Continue without directly focusing in that person.

Thought this summed it up nicely.

It is generally believed that the Sanskrit word naam, the English word 'name' and the Sikh term Naam as used in Gurbani are synonymous. A deeper study reveals that the word Naam as used in the Sikh scripture is of a somewhat different nature and has a more comprehensive spiritual and divine connotation.

The Sanskrit and the English words denote a person or a thing These also mean a designation, reputation, fame, family or clan. Their implication is almost wholly mundane. Whereas Naam has several ramifications. It implies God, the Reality, mystical word or formula to recite or meditate upon (shabad in Gurbani), divine order (hukam) and at places divine teacher (guru) and guru's instructions.

Naam, according to the late Professor Puran Singh, "is the supernaturally natural function of a poetical genius who though in body is at all times of day and night under the influence of the higher soul words of freedom. It is the pure subjectivity of love bursting up under the sole and invisible spirit guidance from below the crusts of earthiness, from under the hard conditions of earthly life."

Naam, further, stands for the union with the Reality, to be attained by the devout repetition of his name. Naam is the sign, the symbol and song of God. It is the key to enter into the presence and the heart of God. By adoration and singing his praises, saintly hearts glow all the time. Naam brings in peace and tranquillity. It is described as the most potent "detergent" which frees the mind of its filth and afflictions and dyes it to prevent further erosion. The sub-conscious mind or the budhi is further sharpened and molded into instant insight or intuitiveness (sudhi). In this sphere, mystical experience occurs at the mere sway of thoughts. Indeed the universe is sustained and held together by Naam: "Naam ke dhare khand brahmand".

God's greatness is beyond human comprehension. But He can be approached through a ladder called Naam which can take us to His height. Naam, therefore, is greater than everything else "sabte ucha jaka nao" and "wada sahib uncha thaon, uche upar ucha nao." In the Sikh scripture God is called by various names such as Ram, Gobind, Mukand, Madhav, Prabhu, Rahim, Karim, Vithal, etc. All such epithet are known as "Karam-Naam" expressing quality and attribute of God. According to Guru Nanak, His eternal name is "Sat", i.e. Truth. He is true and so is His Naam - "Sacha sahib, sach nae." Sat Naam, an attribute given in the Mool Mantra has been His name even before the primal age - "sat naam tera para- purbala."

In Jap Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh has mentioned several hundred Karam-naams in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit and Punjabi. Before spelling these out, he has humbly submitted, in his prologue, that since God is beyond comprehension and description, full justice cannot be done to the subject matter. The appropriate word used by him is "Neti, Neti"; this is not all, this is not all as something more is yet to be said about Him.

A devotee absorbed in Naam is oblivious to sorrow and pain; he remains in ever ascending spirit (chardhi- kala), wishes everyone well (sarbat da bhala) and is always ready to protect the weak and saint (sant ubaran dusht uparan) and fight for righteous causes (shubh kiarman te kabhun na taron). His main demand or prayer is for Naam-Dan, the greatest gift and Grace one can aspire for.

In sum, it may be said that Naam is truth, and eternal, comprehensively symbolic of God's attributes, formless, immaculate and absolute. His adoration and meditation is the gateway to God's domain of Grace and bliss.

Pray Truth for all and say Sat Sree Akaal,

Dear all,

Please listen. Gurdev is singing.

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥

हरि के नाम बिना जगु धंधा ॥

hari ke naam binaa jag dhandhaa.

Without the Name of Hari the world is a business.

je bahutaa samjhaaiai bholaa bhee sao andhao andhaa.1.rahaao. Aasaa M: 1 SGGS Ang 358-3

Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blinds. ||1||Pause||

*****

Some are doing business in this world. They have replaced the word Hari with Wahiguru.

Can somebody refer one Vaak from Gurdev where He suggested doing Simran of Wahiguru?

Pray Truth for all and say Sat Sree Akaal,
Dear all,

Surprisingly all true seekers question the validity of "Waheguru" gur-mantar jaap.
Gurdev never suggested its jaap nor it gives the results described by them.

Please listen. Gurdev is singing about Gurmantra.

हरि का नामु दीओ गुरि मंत्रु ॥

hari kaa naamu deeo guri mantra. GauRee M: 5 SGGS Ang 190-9

*****

Sat1176 jee,
Please let all know from whom you got "Waheguru" gur-mantar jaap and if the name of your Guru is mentioned in SGGS jee.

Pray Truth for all and say Sat Sree Akaal,
Dear all and Sat1176 jee,

You wrote "Please do tell me then what name of god you do jaap off, or do you not believe in mantar jaap at all?"
The True Naam is not an advertisement. It is also not for sharing with anyone.

Please listen. Gurdev is singing.

तिस का मंत्रु न जानै होरु ॥

tis kaa mantru na jaanai horu. GauRee Sukhmanee M: 5 SGGS 284-2

No one else knows his mantra.

Balbir Singh
