Why Do Some Sikhs Have So Many Misconceptions About Sant Jarnail Singh?

I dunno, i'm just really annoyed with how some sikhs are so dumb to beleive everything the indian government says without even thinking twice. I'm talking about many sikhs i've come across on fb pages who say bad things about sant ji.

Whose fault is this? I mean who do we blame for not teaching these Sikhs about how great a sould Sant Ji was. Just been boggling my mind the last few days.

I was aruguing with some sikh the other day who asked me why did he become so violent so fast? All i could do was shake my head, a simple damn google search could tell you about what happened with us pre 1984 (the visakhi massacree), etc. A lot of indian sikhs think he was all about khalistan when we know he just wanted equal rights for us in india.

I just dont understand it. How can some of our own people be so naive. I expect hindus to be ignroant towards sant ji because he has been portrayed as some mass murderer by the indian govt/biased media for hte past 30 years but sikhs I just cant fathom it.

What do you guys think?

Very much agree, a lot of older Sikhs find him to be a "terrorist" because when they were young they were tuned to Indian media portraying Sant ji and the Shaheeds as terrorists and killing Hindus etc..... Sikh youth today should be inspired by his motive to fight injustice as the Sikhs were being treated as slaves back then and still now. A lot of Sikhs don't know the real truth behind 1984. All it takes is some research and reading "A Gallant Defender" can easily see what really happened. I guarantee this guy you talked with was probably following up Indian propaganda and didn't understand fully what happened in Punjab in the 70's and 80's.

My parents never talked to me about Sant ji. I came to know about him when we moved out of India and started going to local Gurdwara. Our older generation does not want to talk about 84. I have seen sikhs who live in foreign countries are more vocal and Gurdwaras do more prachar about it but in India, its a taboo subject esp, in cities.

sant ji was the greatest thing to happen for sikhs in the past century . punjab back then was like how it is now very corrupt, drunkyards everywhere the young men all turning to druggies. Sant jarnail singh bhindrawale ji took a stand and got many of the young ppl off drugs and got them to remember there religion. if this is considered terrorist then something is wrong. but i have a feeling that the sikhs of punjab are waking up.

Guest 12in84

some you guys are correct that it's not talked about.

back in 84, i was 12 yrs old and remember that media showed sant ji with sikh extremist labels.

our people are good at turning blind eyes to issues they can;t understand.

at the time most of them outside india didn;t know exactly what was going on...In UK. they only had this newspaper called '''des pardes'' to go by.

Congress dominates indian politics. Congress has never liked sikhs. indira grew up learning politics from her father nehru who of course never liked us either.

Akali Dal, leading political party in punjab, opposed congress and the oppression of punjabis. When indira got all power happy and suspended democracy to continue her reign, Akali Dal actively opposed this. Obviously when your in power, you dont want people opposing you its just a spanner in the works. Congress also wanted more control over punjab since it has always been the bread basket of india and has the highest per capita income. Bla bla bla loooong story short, indira got mad and subsequently got her pants in a twist.

Now, the notion of "bharat maa" is highly stressed in indian society "jana gana mana", "vande mataram", "mahatma gandhi", "hindustan" etc in schools, film, just about everywhere. Anyone seen to be breaking away or causing harm to this "maa"/goddess is a traitor/the enemy. So all indira had to do was label the sikhs as dissidents. Since there was only 1 tv channel, doordarshan (government owned), 1 radio station, doordarshan (government owned) and only a handful of newspapers, majority government owned/funded, labelling the sikhs as dissidents/traitors/terrorists/separatists, was not going to be a hard job...

Clearly ive jumped from 1 point to the next and given no justice at all to the events of '84 and those pertaining to them. But hopefully you get the picture as to why indians see sikhs and santji as terrorists.

As for khalistan...im unsure whether there ever was an actual movement prior to june 1984. Santji neither endorsed nor opposed a seperate sikh state. As far as he was concerned, the whole of india is ours. Just take a look at sikh statistics in indian history. Without us, there is no india. Fact :)

The third article, "terrorists or freedom fighters" is a load of bias BS. Starts off saying its all about perception and then goes on to label palestinians as terrorists. Lol

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
