Sikhs must unite for SGPC: Sukhbir
Sanjeev Singh Bariana
Tribune News Service

Natheha (Talwandi Sabo), Aug 6
Sikhs, for once, need to get above their habit of ‘dhadebandi’ (factionalism) and unite on the issue of SGPC’s supremacy over the HSGMC.

This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal talking to this correspondent on the sidelines of a campaign for SAD candidate from Talwandi Sabo Jeet Mohinder Sidhu, here today.

“Sikhs, by nature, are habitual of attaching themselves to groups as a part of their daily lives. They all need to come on a common platform and understand the delicate situation in which attempts were being made to finish the universally accepted parliament (Akal Takht) of the Sikhs under the SGPC’, he said.

“We need to understand that sustained efforts have been made since Independence to weaken the Sikhs. Years of turbulence during terrorism followed by a poor resettlement package told the real story. Taking away the supremacy of the SGPC, exercised through the Akal Takht, was the last attempt by an already crumpled Congress. The way the once supreme Congress party has been washed out in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat, it should not expect any magic in Haryana, now”, he added.

So, in short, the failings of the SGPC should be blamed on Congress.

Badals are manipulative and run state machinery for their own benefits. But who will listen? They are very close to centre. Singhs outside Punjab can't do anything. To change the system you need to be part of the system otherwise you are branded as a traitor.

Hmm Akaal Takht under the supremacy of SGPC???

SGPC is formed by an act of India Government and is controlled by political parties. Seems like Shkhibir Badal is saying that Akaal takht should be controlled by the political partied accepted by Government of India. This makes Sikhi, the only major religion being controlled by a state - that too by a state (India) which is controlled by people of other religion, the theology of which is distinctly different from that of Sikhs.

Is Sukhbir Badal now saying that the Sikhs all over the world should obey SGPC which is formed by Indian Government and controlled by the laws of India ?

What right has SGPC to dictate the views of Indian State or political party controlling SGPC to the Sikhs who are citizens of other countries or the ones living in foreign countries?

Let Akal Takht (and other takhts under Akal Takht) be free of SGPC.

Let Akaal Takht develop as an independent body that can guide the Sikhs all over the world free of the interference from Indian Government, biased Indian Judiciary, or an Indian political party.

Initially it was an independent body, until some bright spark had an idea of creating an ubiquitous Sikh body in the 20's.

While Akal Takht should be independent of SGPC, but SGPC should also be independent of all political parties including Akali Dal.

Furthermore, with in Akal Dal there should be a clause stating that a son(or daughter) cannot succeed his father's position in order to keep in check those who have tendencies of turning the party into their family's property like badal did

Agree it is not the SGPC that is the problem it is who controls it. Basically most of our Sikh organizations/ institutions have Badal controlling them as a proxy for the BJP/ RSS. Some others are or have been controlled by the Congress as was Santa Singh and the Nihangs. The SGPC and Akal Takht need to be free or we will end up with the Mahants of pre 1920 that nearly caused the Sikhs to become Hindus.

The Sanatan group try to make out that everything was fine before the formation of the SGPC. Just a few facts of what it was like before the Akali movement ( real Sikhs at that time).

The Akal Takht Jathedhar in 1919 gave a Siropa to General Dyer after the Amritsar Massacre and made him a honoury Sikh even though Dyer said he smoked and could not be a Sikh.

At Nankana Sahib the Mahant carried out rapes of visitng pilgrims. He massacred non violent Sikhs when they tried to remove him.

Idols were introduced into many Gurdwaras including the Darbar Sahib. On their removal the Mahants built the Durgiana Mandir in Amritsar to copy the Darbar Sahib and continue Sanatan activities.

The SGPC was created to ensure that all Gurdwaras followed Sikh principles. The Sanatan Nihangs attack the SGPC because of this.

However today the SGPC has been hijacked by the Badal clan acting in co operation with the BJP/RSS.That is the problem.

    • Been so much nindya and attacking Shastarvidiya since the 2000s, however if we look at gatka now it's still mostly as poor and poorly taught as it was back then, still morris dancing moves and still behzti moves in BBC shows about sikhi and vaisakhi. If people were going to attack shastarvidiya, wouldn't have made sense to improve gatka instead and make it more effective? Additionally, the Nihang Singh presence has improved greatly now, and the cracks within the the SGPC and affiliated jatha jathebandis are showing more greatly as panth becomes more knowledgable with dasam bani and itihas day-by-day, so much gyaan which was lost within panjabi sikhs during colonial times. In the 2000s, the groups were able to talk down this bani and  gyaan by associating it with  RSS and hindus, brahminwaad etc. Not working so well now is it? However with gyaan it would be also good for us to try and preserve our martial arts and keertan vidiya as well! More and more crazy keertan videos are coming out from jatha members that are being made fun of and making sangat annoyed and upset, on tiktok and instagram reels.

Being from Punjab, almost every Sardaarji i know (amritdhari or not) sleeps/showers with their hair uncovered. I don't think Guru Sahib asked us to wear Dastar to sleep and I don't think it is in SRM.   The idea of "keski being worn to sleep" is cos in Bollywood films (Bachna Ae Haseeno) Sikh characters usually tie a gol parna when sleeping since the actor's usually Hindu. So they gotta cover his head somehow or he'd have cut hair. Same reason Diljit wore a pagg to bed in the El Sueno vid. Only time they didn't do that was in Gadar with Sunny Deol which just looked odd tbh   What in the world? What sikh or even a decent human would base their knowledge of their culture or religion on a movie industry, that too Bollywood?  Believe me, no sikh ever said, I must cover my head becasue an actor did so in a movie. I've been doing it all wrong, I must start covering mh head because the sikh in that movie did.  Just because every panjabi and sardaar you know, does something, also doesn't make it right..  Follow the guru. And if you have a medical condition, then exemptions can be made.  Just admit it, because of my medical condition, I am not able to follow this rehit. Why are you getting everyone else to drop to your level?
    • Wasn't Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom on amd always commemorated on 6th June? How come it was 30th May?  Just like 6th June 84, where the likes of Terrorists like Indira Gandhi chose to attack Darbar Sahib where many many innocent Sikhs would suffer, as they went to commemorate Martyrdom of Maharaj.
    • best thing is to follow the Sikh Rehat Maryada and use common sense for gray areas. Anything outside of that's irrelevant tbh that code is what Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the 5 Pyaare agreed on when creating Amrit in 1699
