Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Waheguru ji ki fateh

I've recently been listeneing to the shri sukhmani sahib, for the past couple of weeks but I feel as though listening to the paath may not be the best option to get the full effects of the paath - is that in anyway true.

I currently not able to read or understand gurmukhi being spoken, however I am able to read through translation - is it ok for me to read it in English, or is it a nrssacity to read it in gurmukhi to feel it's full effect.

I'm pondering over this question because before my result day I listened to the sukhmani sahib paath, for happeniness not just for result day(which didn't go to well) but also for my wishes and desires to be fulfilled, I'm very muchc dedicated to sikhi, naam jap, and listening to paath, however lately everything seems to be going dull, I'm becoming frustrated and seem to be getting no satisfaction out of life - which may mean I must be doing the sukhmani paath incorrectly - I've also briefly spoken to a gyani who said that waheguru ji doesn't give us what we desire because there's a weakness inside- could the weakness be that I'm just listening to the paath and not reciting it in gurmuhki or English?

On a personal note I'm trying to over come kaam and krodh - but I've recently fallen to theses vices due to frustration of life being unsatisfying, and I know that by doing naam Simran of waheguru - by his grace I will be able to overcomes these temptation, desires and frustrations - hopefully.

So my question is - do I have to read the sukhamni sahib paath, or is it ok to just listen to it?

And does it matter wether I read in gurmukhi or English - when I have the time to read(when not doing college work, or helping others)

Or does the effect only come if reading in gurmuki.

Also does it matter if I do other things and listen to the paath at the same time or should I stop everything and read it to myself without distraction?

Lastely personally I struggle to get up during amritvela, could you please offer me some advice on how I can stay awake constantly everyday.

Thank you all , May waheguru ji bless you.

Listening to the path is good. If you read it, I feel it is the best to read it in Gurmukhi. If you dont know Gurmukhi, you may start learning it and in the meantime (whatever time it takes- months, years) listen to the path.

The most important thing is patience (hukam rjai chalna). Kam,Krodh etc are said to be mahabali (extremely strong) in Gurbani, so It will take time before you can win them over and it takes even more time to attain constant state of happiness. But serving the Guru and reading/listening bani is happiness in itself! andd atleast the things wont get worse if you are doing some effort.

Bhagat Farid hung himself upside-down in a well for 12 years before he could attain God! Not that we need such penance, but my point is that it is a difficult path and we need to have patience. Naam,Seva and accepting God's sweet will (Bhana) will make it easy and I am sure it is worth it!

On a personal note - I also struggle to wake up at Amritvela, succumb to Kaam, krodh some times and get frustrated, may the sangat do Ardaas for us and hopefully we will see through our journey to destination some day!

Guru Sahib says to us Gaveoh, Sunu, Paroh nit bani.

Therefore they place singing first, followed by listening followed by reading. Therefore it is not a bad deed to listen to the bani but it would be very hard to stop the mind from wandering which is perhaps why you are doing other things whilst listening to the paath, which may be the cause of your current feelings; since you are not really listening to all of the paath. It is like watching TV whilst on the laptop, you do not focus entirely on whats on the TV it is background noise.

What I would suggest is the following:

Many people in your position listen to bani but follow the recording using a romanised Gutka. This way they are able to concentrate and can also move from romanised to gurmukhi.

Many will disagree with me on this point but the 'paraas kala' of simran is very great and it needs to be balanced with other paath and seva. Therefore at this stage I would suggest you do Mool Mantar. Ideally obtain a mala which has 108 beads and do 6 mala a day - 648 mool mantar

For amrit vela use your ego to wake you up. If you go to bed for at least 10.30pm your routine could then be:

3.30 am wake up - isnaan etc

4.15 am Mool Mantar

5.30 am aim to go to a local gurdwara

With going to the gurdwara each morning you will begin to see some regular faces who will also notice you. Your ego will not want to be late since it wants to look good in front of these people. This has worked for numerous people.

Finally do as much seva as you can in particular joria di seva (cleaning shoes) as you leave the gurdwara.

Hopefully a combination of all of the above will help you on your path.

The best results are achieved when you read, recite, listen, contemplate & practice Gurbani.

Coming to the main problem - fulfilling of desires, nobody gets it all !

We only receive what & when Waheguru ji approves.

Let's be reasonable, supposing a person is given Mbbs without qualifying, how will he treat patients?

It's obvious that he is unsuitable for this profession.

But he can look at relative occupations like Pharmacy, Nursing, Hospital Management, Surgical goods supplier etc

Failing one test or closing of one door just means look for other open doors !

And yes there are negative effects of kaam, Krodh, Lobh & Ninda on your Seva.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
