If you're born into a Gursikh family then you should definitely take Amrit.

If you don't take Amrit then its very possible that you'll be taken over by the 5 thieves at every other part of your life.

At Amrit Sanchar the 5 Singhs tell you that from now on all your previous karams are finished and if you keep your rehit and stay away from kurehits then you will not be born again.

If for some reason you do end up messing up then you will be given another chance and your birth will be in a Gursikh family. This ties up what is stated in the beginning. Definitely take Amrit if you're born into a Gursikh family. Or atleast do 5 bania da Nitnem. Or as much as you can and build up your jeevan.

Japji Sahib is a must!

Seriously though, read up on Sant Attar Singh Mastuana's life and specifically about his mother, who passed away and was not allowed to go to (Sachkhand/mukhti - forgot term, doing this from memory) by Dharam Raaj. She had done immense seva and bhagti, but was unable to proceed to liberation as she was not Amritdhari. She was returned to the world, administered Amrit and then was able to proceed to her final destination.

That's IF you had done immense seva and bhagti. Those others who have not are liable to Dharam Raaj and his jamdoots for a very long beatdown and reincarnation cycle to continue.
