Maryada Broken, Granthi Hands Over Sri Sahib To Michael Hayley

AMRITSAR: A member of the Sikh clergy handing over his ceremonial sword to South Carolina governor Nikki Haleys husband here upset a number of people at the Golden Temple here on Saturday.

Granthi of the Golden Temple, Giani Jaswinder Singh, handed over his siri sahib to Michael Hayley during the couples visit at the temple.

Many said this was against maryada or Sikh religious law. The granthi handed over the sword after the couple touched his feet to ask for his blessings.

The sword was given after manager of the Golden Temple Partap Singh, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) members Manjit Singh and Rajinder Singh Mehta had already honoured the Haleys.

Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Gurbachan Singh said, You should ask him why he honoured Haleys husband with his siri sahib which he had held in his capacity of granthi of Golden Temple. It is wrong and violation of maryada.

Head granthi of the Golden Temple, Giani Jagtar Singh said, It would have been better had he given some other sword to Haley instead the one which is given to a granthi as an honour. He said he would raise the issue with SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar so he could give a message to all.

Giani Jaswinder Singh handed over his siri sahib to the couple during their visit to the Golden Temple.

Senior professor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Balwant Singh said a granthi carry a ceremonial sword which becomes part of their dress code. He said there was no need to honour anyone in an individual capacity especially when Michael had already been honoured by SGPC.

He added that he should have avoided honouring Michael with his ceremonial sword. If at all he wanted to honour him, he could have given him some other sword and not the one held by him, the scholar said.

Despite repeated attempts Giani Jaswinder Singh couldnt be contacted.

Fair enough, this was an absolutely wrong thing to do. Not sure why no one was mad when Salman Khan was cheered as he took his top off to do ishnaan at the sarovar.

So Granthi Sahib Jee is basically showing our girls that you can leave Sikhi and even do an inter religious marriage and it will be acceptable as long as you gain worldly success.

How can one give someone siropa to one's husband who leaves the faith. This is just pure bs politics. Nikkey Haley's father has no right I don't care if he is a gursikh or keeps his kesh he has failed to continue Sikhi through his family generation by letting his daughter convert just for political gains. Pure BS.

This is a good example of bad leadership over there.. We are in the point where dera clashes are occurring more frequently now propagandizing anti-Sikh agenda while Akal Takht is quiet. We have Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa doing a "do or die" fast and is probably gonna be shunned by Akal Takht jathedar once again....

Nobody can touch granthi jaswinder singh. He is close to badal parivaar and will stay at this position regardless of gross mistakes he made over the years.

1. Does Bhangra and punjabi cultural stuff at his patit bhateja's marriage. Still no action !

2. Killed a person with car in amritsar but never stopped (Hit & Run) because he was running late for a program. While coming back, people stopped him. Still no action !

3. Missed chaupai sahib during rehrass sahib @ darbar sahib. He is still there..

^ its not her fault as she never got the chance to know sikhi. My nana ji know this family very well. Migrating in 60's kinda broke their link with sikhi. Our family stayed in sikhi because of sangat of few bhagti walay singhs. Old folks know "thakur singh amritsar" who was very high spirit chardikala gursikh was in fact fufar of governor nikki.

The VIP culture needs to be broken down in amritsar. Now they started closing down sangat flow inside darbar sahib if some VIP person is due for matha taek.

Or she just wanted to "fit in" as they say over here in America. No excuses its either she didn't try to learn Sikhi and just converted for political purposes or her father didn't do a good job of teaching her Sikhi from a young age.
