Originally the Jathedar of Budha-Dal was chosen as Jathedar. Nawab Kapoor Singh, Baba Jassa Singh, Akali Phula Singh etc. Since the day the SGPC has however overtaken panthic matters, the Akali Dal places their own puppet.

it was a tool used byn the british to push a certain brand of Sikhi that was devoid of any self determination and subversant..

Exactly, the british then placed democracy into the sikh panth/panjab, which is against the sikh political sphere! Ive seen/heard Many sikhs saying how our dharam is pro-democracy, wen in actual fact, its totally an alien concept to sikhi. Sikhs, r only run by panj piyare, THATS IT!

Is panjab now not a "democracy", in the sense, that ppl have elected again n again n again the stupid badal family? If panjabs leaders were chosen on panj piyare method, then only panthic minded personel wud b at the helm. Look at the damdami taksal, of the bhindrawales. Sant jarnail singh, was chosen after much deliberation of id imagine, the panj piyare n of course recomendation of previous jathedars, kartar n gurbhachan singh bhindrawales.

Even look at the uk, this country is a genuine democracy, and its a total dump of a nation, pray to the lord, the khalsa law takes over this shameless land in the future. Atleast we wudnt have stupid grooming gangs pimpin n abusing little girls, n bein allowed 2 get away with it, coz of political correctness. Under panj piyare system, heads will b lined up of paedos n cut off with a jakara. I mean even look at the police in uk, they dont even have bloody SHASTAR!?! How can u deliver/regulate justice, wen u r not even armed? Outrageous prententiousness!

So, how would the panj piaray get chosen? What if there are 50 Singhs or Singhnees who would like to be 5 piaray? How do we choose the right Panj? What qualifications would be required? Which jatha? They need to be well versed in economics, politics, and be very highly educated. Running a country is not that easy my friend.

Indeed, i never said it was easy. Well id imagine the panj would in the olden days, be the most knowledgeable spiritually, has leadership qualities and bravest aswel. Nawab kapur singh, for example was just an ordinary sevadar at the gurdwara, do the seva of chaur sahib of sggs, frm there, he went on to become the leader of the panth. Akali phoola singh, aswel, came from humble background, n became jathedar of the akal takht, and a huge personality in ranjit singhs empire. He openly spoke out against the actual maharajas wrong doings, n ordered shittar to be given to the ruler of the empire. Does the current akal takht jathedar have that level guts n love for sikhi to punish badals for their wrongdoings? Nope he awards him with panth rattan award!

So as i mentioned before, id imagine those chosen in the panj pyare/leadership roles, r those who r incorruptable, r capable in all duties (amrit sanchars, nitnem etc). Which jatha wud they b from? Well could choose 5 singhs frm 5 jathas maybe? This is wat happned wen the rehit maryada was written durin british rule. All jathas had to agree to disagree on various things, but they all did it for the sake of the panth.

I too am curious about this. It seems we are a very desi community that makes strange decisions. For example, what qualifications did Jathedar Ranjit Singh Ji have? Is the only reason he became Jathedar because he assassinated the Niranakri leader? That makes no sense at all. Same applies for people requesting Rajoana to be Jathedar...this is why we're so behind. Desi mentality.

I think Badal calls the shots these days... But here's another way to look at things: what if Jathedar Gurbachan Singh is actually a good person and is trying his hardest to do well, given the current scenario in the Panth. Maybe he knows that if he speaks up against Badal, he will get replaced by one of Badal's men, who could do a lot of damage to the Panth. Maybe his hands are tied and he knows that things could be worse if someone replaces him. I have met Jathedar Ji many years ago and he seemed like a very knowledgeable and Panthic person. (but that's just based on a short conversation)

I also don't agree with Bhai Gurbaksh Singh always blaming the Jathedar for the Singhs not coming out of jail. Does the Jathedar hold the jail keys? Maybe he tried and the government gave a flat out "no". How's that his fault? Maybe he fears that if he speaks up, he will get replaced by an anti Panthic person? Our people are known for making quick and emotional decisions without putting much thought into it. For example, the Canadian and USA sangat decided that whichever kathavachak, kirtani etc doesn't visit Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Ji will not be able to do parchar in Canada and USA. For the next few days people started flooding Amb sahib. All the parcharaks who had not come for the first month suddenly dropped everything to rush there to make sure they can come to Canada. THAT is Desi mentality. What if a kathavachak couldn't come because they are caring for a sick family member? What if they don't agree with hunger strikes? What if they are travelling to other parts of Punjab to do parchar? This is the kind of thinking that is hurting us so badly as a kaum. We don't use out minds. We just get emotional and start making noise. Whether it's choosing our leaders, putting up marble Gurdwaras over our history, or beating up pakhandi babay... We are just so Desi. I think we will progress when we are ready to put our heads together and actually make well thought out decisions. Buy that doesn't seem like it's happening anywhere.

If your a Akal Takht jathedar and you see how your Sikh kaum is being destroyed slowly bit by bit in Punjab with anti Sikh agenda but choose not to speak up against it because you will lose your position has to be one of the most PATHETIC excuses ever. The Akal Takht Jathedar should not be afraid to speak up for the truth and the truth only. He is just a puppet at the moment for Badals.
