YUBA CITY, Calif. (KCRA) —It’s history in the making as a woman of Sikh descent is the first one elected to City Council, likely not just in California, but in the nation.

52741104cf6ca.image.jpg?resize=205%2C307Preet Didbal, 46, stood next to her mother and was sworn in by her daughter as part of the Yuba City ceremony for new council members Tuesday night.

“This is a big day,” Didbal told KCRA 3, her eyes filled with tears. “It is very emotional … I still can’t believe it.”

Her journey started from humble beginnings.

“We worked in the fields here,” Didbal said. “We are the farm laborers who just raised ourselves up. I was one of the first out of our family to go to college.”

Didbal holds an associate degree in nutrition, a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s in public administration.

She is currently a correctional health care services manager in the California Department of Corrections.

Didbal recalls getting her parents’ thoughts years ago about getting into politics.

“My dad, my parents said (to me), ‘We were raising you like our sons, as if you were our sons,’ because (they had) four daughters,” Didbal said. “‘We give you the strength to go out and do what you want.'”

She has served on the Yuba City Planning Commission for eight years.

Didbal said she will focus on children, education and public safety during her term.

Among the people who packed council chambers during the ceremony were young girls who look up to Didbal.

“From where I was standing, I see all these men and then I see Preet,” said 15-year-old Ravina Sidhu. “And it’s wonderful, because she’s telling you to go for it.”

“I do admire her,” 11-year-old Meneek Sidhu said. “I think she’ll be a great councilwoman and good for our community.”

Singh Station you write an article severely criticizing a Gurmat movie like Chaar Sahibzaade for no reason what so ever yet you take pride in a patit woman that has been elected as city council member?

Patit? Was she ever amritdhari? As you can only be patit if you had Amrit.

Also the movie Char Sahibzaade, have you seen it? Then you will know Who made it? Who financed it, easy as his photo appears at the start? Why only praise the product, and not look at who made it.

Apply same logic here look at the end achievements of this women without criticising her.

A sikh who has not taken amrit also can become patit. Any Sikh who cuts hair is a patit.

Clearly she cuts hair to fit in with the western mindset.

cutting of kesh is one of the 4 major sins for a Sikh. Being Amritdhari or not is no excuse for committing those sins. If she's not amritdhari does that mean it is okay for her to eat meat, use drugs or tamakoo or fornicate which are the other 3 major sins? if not than why is cutting hair okay for her?

I would not have commented on this issue. But seeing how it is Singh Station posting this as if he is proud of her, yet he made such a big deal by unnecessarily criticizing Chaar Sahibzaade, a movie which touched everyone who saw it. From that I thought that maybe he must have been a super strict type Singh or something but then he surprises me when shows he is proud of a woman of Sikh background who is clearly a committer of one of the Bajjar Kurahits.

Another example of your utter lack of knowledge of basics of Sikhi.

And also raises serious concerns about you claiming having done your Masters when

you do not even know that we are discussing a "woman" here and not "this women."

Respected Singh ji

No we don't take pride in labeling this bibi as Sikh Woman. This is simply a news and source has been specified.

As a news website, we don't really evaluate all content sourced from other website.

SinghStation's own views are usually added underneath our OP-ED section or the Gurblog section (pls read disclaimer on our website too).

Relating to this particular news, personally I do agree with your views and dont feel any pride of finding a Sikh woman in her.

Also as far as Chaar Sahibzaade movie views are concerned, we have expressed both sides of the coin...but its upto the audience which part they dont want to see...

May Waheguru ji bless her and all of us...

How can you be a Sikh if you have not taken Amrit? I thought you can not be born into Sikhi! You become a Sikh by taking Amrit.

Please refer to my earlier response.

Meat eating? How do you know? even when the rehit maryada does with definitive answer but you do! Meat is not forbidden only in some peoples eyes and off course this forum.

Please explain? Makes no sense, as I was referring to the women in the thread. Please do explain as in England, the origin of the English language, it was grammatically correct.

BTW yes I have a MSc, what year did you graduate? You will know by my qualification that you can not reprimand me on the odd grammatical mistake as I do not hold. MA.

A women would mean we did not know! But uh ohh re read the thread so we have a name. So this women, in the thread would mean the women named. Again fail.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
