This is a very good task you are undertaking. Nitnem should be memorized since it is done daily. Repetition is the key. The more repetition you do the better. Pick a bani, read it several times a day, also within that bani make a daily goal to read a particular Pauri dozens of times. Once you have one Pauri memorized, then move on the the next. If you get stuck on a tukh or find it a bit difficult to recite, then read it until it becomes easy to recite. Do ardas everyday and request Guru Jee to help you memorize Nitnem. Ultimately it is Gurprasaad. It is also Guru Jee's kirpa that He put it in your thoughts to want to memorize Nitnem. Maybe this is Guru Sahib's Ishara to you to go ahead and memorize Bani.

Memorizing Nitnem it not difficult if done systematically. During the time of Sant Gurbachan Singh Bhindranwale, to become a student of Taksal you had to memorize all of Panj Granthi. This is the kind of dedication Sikhs should strive for.

helped me to listen to Japji Sahib every morning on a CD, and recite along using a gutka. Then in evening I tried to memorise one pauri looking at the English translations to help to understand the meanings. Found it difficult at the beginning but over time it was a lot easier as my mind naturally tuned into the sounds and rhythm because I was listening everyday. I think that is the power of bani, feels natural and effortless after a while, all with Waheguruji's blessings. Try not to put pressure on yourself, let it happen naturally and enjoy the experience.

Memorisng can be effortless, if there is genuine love for His Lotus Feet in one´s heart, mind and soul....

Then, the more one goes through the Bani, more the bliss felt in one´s being...

It is being like a child in a chocolate store ....

I too would recommend this method for all banis.

Reading along whilst listening to audio will also help with pronunciation errors that one may encounter.
