New Kitchen, Hall to Cater to Devotees at Golden Temple

By Harpreet Bajwa Published: 22nd March 2015 06:00 AM Last Updated: 22nd March 2015 03:01 AM

CHANDIGARH: To cope with the huge rush of devotees in the world’s largest community kitchen at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a new langar hall and kitchen have come up to cater to 5,000 devotees, which is twice as large as the earlier facility.

Sources said that another multi-storey building adjacent to the existing langar facility is being constructed at the Golden Temple complex. The four-storey building with three lifts will be the first fully air-conditioned building in the complex. Its basement will be utilised to store rations.

The building will have a hot and cold water tank and dishes will be cleared on the ground floor. The first floor will be connected to the first floor of the existing langar hall building to accommodate more pilgrims. The second floor will be used for washing the vegetables and cutting them. Piped gas and solar panels will replace the numerous LPG cylinders and wood used for cooking.

To combat air pollution, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) plans to install non-polluting chimneys in the kitchen. The steam in these chimneys will flow through water, reducing air pollution. “We have reduced our energy consumption and have come to minimal usage as far as energy is concerned,” said a SGPC official.

Boilers will be installed for cooking rice and daal. An automatic roti maker will make two lakh rotis each day, up from the present one lakh.

Non subsidized domestic cylinder costs in india around 615Ruppe , subsidized one is for Rupee 425\426 ( gas 14.2 Kg ) Conmmercial Cylinder is sold for 1250 to 1350 depending on place of consumption (19 Kg) Thus gas for commercial costs not less than 65 a kg , while domestic non subsidy is around 43 per kg & domestic subsidized is about Rs 30 a kg ( one connection holder - the household gets 12 cylinders a year under subsidised rated & there after at non subsidised rates ) , While all eateries , restaurants etc have to buy gas at commercial rates . As langars are not run for profits , logically they should get gas at lesser prices than commercial establishments (* cost of gas to oil Co s is around Rs 584 per cylinder of 14.2 kg - according to price buildup documents available at websites of all gas ditributing Cos ) ie Rs 41.12 per Kg and the gurdwaras have to pay 65 per Kg for thier langar consumption , which includes hefty profit of more than 50 % ( 100(65-42)/42 )for govt. as all gas ditribution is through govt owned co's. and they forget that only gorrdwara langars supply food to ppl hit by natural calamities whenever needed , withut being asked

As the other institutions like church , Masjid & mandirs do not run langars usually ( I have seen some Temples have kitchens associated with them , but certain payments have to be made for utilising the service - not like fre as in Langars at Guru Ghars ) these communities have no big issue in the context , and hence only Gurudwaras & thier Managements are time and again approaching Govt for charging fair price on gas supplied to Gurdwaras

The rates given above can be verified from respective sites ( indane.co.in , ebharatgas.co.in , hindustanpertroleum.com )

is this not a local state government issue and if so what can Badal's lot do....are there any plans to built potable water storage , just in situations of drought or Waheguru na kare siege? future forecasts indicate less rainfall for Punjab year on year.

What is cutting TV telecast of Darbar Sahib going to achieve?

I would enhance telecast providing red button screen content which would have live translations of gurbani shabads , maybe also providing feeds from all the smaller akhand paats going on similtaneously so people can get laha of listening and the granthis have to speak loud always since its day and night transmission. Tourism should be seen as a positive to push for international heritage status also a way to do parchaar in multitude of languages , but it is only going to happen if SGPC is cleared of crooks and Monies directed towards this from golak.

it is not state subject , energy & petro are central Govt jurisdictions - so for these matters Centre has to be approached .Right now the topic is Gas Subsidy , why drag water in it , anyway the water flows into Main Sarowar through Santokhsar ( which has been conceptualised to act as stabilisation unit so the main sarowar gets lesser silt alongwith fresh water , but now modern desilting plant is also installed ) via small underground canal called hansali and flows out through Kaulsar & two small sarovars near the complex called Gurdwara Baba deep Singh ji , back throu an unserground channel into river Beas .So emergency can be taken care of and will not be problem

All UK Gurdwaras are registered charities....therefore they qualify for tax relief on ALL utilities.

How are you arguing that it is somehow beneath us to ask for legal exemptions, which are available and used by everyone else....have we become so ankhi that we are prepared to pay over the odds for services available for others at a cheaper price?

only thinking that each gurdwara should be secure in water if we have to face hard times again...it is only what a good sikh should want to defend Guru ji and his sangat .

pangaphish is it not a matter of ankh when the same people stealing from Guru ghar openly then go and make requests on the gurdwarey' behalf for relief ... somewhere the disconnect in people's minds has to be fixed , sure get the rights our gurdwarey are due no problem but at the same that saving will not be felt by sangat as the thieves are openly taking monies from golak under our eyes. Get rid of the vermin and secure the taxfree status, remove the money laundry for Badal's nefarious activities too.
