Petition Change.org : Delete Name Of Harminder Sahib From World Heritage Nomination List

Recommended Posts

If it is to be believed what has been published in the news article at the Sikhsiyasat website, the SGPC seemed to have already given its consent. If it is true, then it is the biggest act of treason done to Sikhs in entire history of the Panth by the Badal group. Time has come to vote them out of SGPC and boycott and expel from the Panth each and every one belonging to that group.

Signed, I wish I could actually do something, but I don't know what to do. Bhai Jugraj Singh from Basics Of Sikhi seems against meaningless petitions. I don't know if this will change anything.

The petition will not make any difference to indian govt but maybe taken seriously by the world heritage organisation.

It also highlights and publicises another trespass by india on sikh sovereignty. It will help wake up some ignorant souls.

Keep sharing it!

Note sure what this means - Does anyone know what being a world heritage site will mean for Harmandir Sahib?

From the petiton:

To declare Harmandar Sahib as a heritage site is highly shocking to the entire Sikh community. This place belongs to the Sikh community and it is not the right of anyone to take it over. The present generation Sikh community is looking after Sri Harmandar Sahib very well and it stands as the most important place of Sikhs and Sikhism.

The take-over of Sri Harmandar Sahib is an absolute infringement of fundamental rights of Sikhs and a challenge to the religious freedom of the Sikh community. It is also construed as an interference in the internal matters of the Sikhs. This move also violates many of the Articles as laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by UNO.

The Sikh community does not endorse the consideration of Sri Harmandar Sahib as a Heritage site by the Indian Government to UNESCO / UN. This move has not been done by involving the Sikh community but has been silently done without sharing information about it to the Sikh community. In fact, it stands as a complete deceit to the entire Sikh community by offering away the rights of our holiest shrine.

It's a double edged sword, on the plus side it gives Harmandir Sahib more protection, the maintenance will be funded by Unesco but the negatives outway the positives especially for sikhs, the Indian government would basically handle the day to day management of it and be in charge, it will loose significance as a religious site, thankfully all the Indian government can do is put the name forward, it's up to Unesco to make the decision so signing this petition will make a difference, if enough people voice opposition they usually do sit up and listen because they are answerable to the UN as they are a agency that works under them.
