Son's Dastar Bandhi Ceromony

Hi, my son decided some years ago, he was not going to cut his hair....now at the age of 11 almost 12, we are having a dastar bandi ceromony.....I've never been yo one, so unsure of what exactly to expect...except the obvious!

Any advice would be gratefully received...do we need to give gifts etc....
