This Is Why Gatka Is Not Taken Seriously

Why isn't firearms training part of Shastar Vidhiya ? If a war breaks out we shouldn't be throwing spears at tanks. The reason we have been massacred many times is that we choose to use older weaponry and techniques instead. Sant Jarnail singh and 200 Singhs used old WWII rifles. Imagine if Kharkus had same light arms as the Indian Army. It would have changed the course of history.

Probably because a big tegha goes better with their chakar, dumallas and cholas than a 9mm does.

A lot of them like to pretend they're following in the steps of Puraatan warriors. But as Johnny Veer pointed out, in accounts of the Puraatan Singhs penned by their enemies they are often acclaimed for their proficiency with firearms (matchlocks and flintlocks). This fixation with the weapons of the antique world is a product of romantic nostalgia, but the Khalsa of old was nothing if not practical.

I'll try and get some quotes later.

Sorry to disappoint you cisco singh but thats not Gatka. That's just some stage stunts that some are now doing and say this is "Gatka". This all started from that Bir Khalsa Group.

This is incorrect " fake" "jahir Gatka" has existed for a long time, ever since after the Anglo Sikh wars after which British inspired watered down Sikhi was pushed by the British and their chelas , Gurbhachan Singh Bhindranewale records this as below.

Two Forms of Vidiya - Gatka and Shastarvidiya - Sant Gurbachan Singh Bhindranvale

The following passage is from 'Gurbani Paat Darpan' written by Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindranvale. Baba Ji is explaining two forms of vidiya [science/learning], the first being for show and the second being the real vidiya. Baba Ji uses the example of one performing exhibition Gatka as the false vidiya, whereas the real soorma [warrior] vidiya is where there is no show/exhitibtion.

From Gurbani Paat Darpan, page 37-38.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

There are two forms of 'Vidiya' [science]

The first is called Pate Baaz [swinging a stick], that form is done for show, and to display their performance, placing potatos on someones face, chest, back etc and covering their eyes, that is their skills. Whatever is placed on top [of someone], whether it is potatos, carrots, or radish, they cut that without cutting that person. This form [of vidiya] is done to show their own performance and accomplishment in order to make the viewers happy and to fill their own belly's [acquiring money for it], this is the 'vidiya' [science/learning] of Pate Baaz [one who just spins a stick, i.e. Gatka Baaj].

[similar to this] form is a one who becomes a Pandit scholar who performs discourse as preaching to get people to praise him, yet he himself cannot enshrine [what he preaches], he gets them to praise them, and gets material wealth, but he himself cannot attain what he preaches, and still for people preaches sermons of wisdom. That type of vidiya [science/learning] is like that of the Pate Baaj [one who just spins a stick, i.e. Gatka Baaj].

The second type of Vidiya [science/learning] is that of a warrior, a courageous warrior adorns weapons and goes to war, giving the enemies martyrdom and attaining victory, or getting martyrdom themselves.

In this way the way of the warrior is like Brahm Vidiya. A warrior kills with his weapons, where as a Pate Baaj [one who just spins a stick, i.e. Gatka Baaj] merely only does a exhibition, they only break the top [item] and do not hit any limbs. A [real] warrior breaks all the limbs of ignorance and attains great bliss while living in the visible [sargun] form.

I don't disagree for most part with what Cisco says so long as there is no plug for Nidar because he is a complete sham and doesn't have anything of value to teach.

At end of day many arts that are used by jangi soormay are similar with little variation. Gatka is preparation and like I said in my previous post, once the fundamentals are solid (no wasted movements and proper foot work) sky is limit. A Soorma who has conquered himself can become a Jangi Soorma on battlefield as well by emplying vidya he has learnt. In all sword play and knife fighting it is taught with wood or kydex replicas with similar weight.

Cisco Singh jee, first of all, the term 'Gatka' is a very broad term. It can be used for the showmen who perform on stage for the audience like Bir Khalsa group but it can also be used for the combat art as practiced by Sikh warriors s like Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Bhai Fauja Singh jee and nearly all the Nihangs Dals in India. Ironically even Niddar used to call his martial art as chatka 'Gatka' lol.. Its funny how the term swinging was added in the brackets even though its not in the original Punjabi. The Earliest British accounts of swordsman of india they faced also mention the same swinging Gatka movements. The swinging movements is how warriors from South Asia, Afghanistan, Iran would handle their swords in combat.

Whats interesting is how Sant jee did not mention anything about Niddar's martial arts. He just differenciated between a showman and a brave warrior who would use his combat skills in battle and attain Shaheedi. It seems the so called 'last Sikh warrior' is the showman Sant jee mentions about who show off but when it comes to showing their Bahaduri they sign apology letters in Nander(the video is available on YouTube).

Maybe it's time for a new beginning? I think we should promote martial like Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Karate...etc, etc among our young. Maybe even start our very own Punjabi Dojo's.

I know this sounds crazy but in a country like the US, we can learn how to use guns effectively as well.

I think this would be in line with our martial spirit of the Khalsa.

There is a reason people use the phrase 'playing gatka'. Nobody plays Muay Thai or Krav Maga. These are authentic and effective martial arts. Gatka, I'm sorry to say, is not. Just try twirling your kirpan around in the air like your Gatka Ustaad taught you in a real fight, and see what happens. Whilst you're being theatrical and busting out your epic roundhouse talwar moves two feet up in the air, some lafunga will punch a table knife into your sides.

Shastar Vidiya was the battlefield art of the Puraatan SInghs. It actually was effective, so effective in fact that it was banned by the British. It pretty much choked and died, and Gatka is only a dim echo of this.

The modern gatka fad is, in my opinion, an embodiment of what we Sikhs have become - overweight/underweight softies playing at being soldiers, dressing like soldiers, talking like soldiers, but not being soldiers. More interested in the pageantry and giving it the mouth than actually doing something. We are obsessively nostalgic, leeching off of the sterling martial reputation of our ancestors to protect our fragile egos from the realization that we are a shadow of what we once were.

I agree with most of this reply is spot on, although Krav Maga is a relatively new art developed by isreali special forces, its my authentic rather its a blend of existing techniques from other arts. Still highly effective though.

Leaving Nidar Singh out of this, he's not really relevant here other than he is right in highlighting that there has been a decline in the martial prowess, knowledge of combat arts and soldier lifestyle amongst the Sikh kaum.

We should do our best to encourage Sikhs to learn "effective" combat systems instead of performing circus tricks for financial gain on the TV.

Learn effective art forms eskrima, bjj, panantukan, Kali, silat, Arnis, etc.

I'm also I'm agreement that modern forms of warfare should be learnt such as firearms.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
