Very Important Check Your Sggs English Translations - Please Be Alert

Dear Sadh Sangat Ji, I just realised that I was using apps - Gurbani Nirvaan and Gurbani Ujagar which use English translation from Dr Sant singh Khalsa. There is a particular line which was with the wrong meaning. However there are other lines which have not been translated correctly. Please kindly inform all your relatives and friends.

The No 1 states that worms wish to come home whereas Gurbani clearly states the word riis.... which means to copy. This means that the first meaning is wrong.

We need to sort this out as this is a major problem of us and our youth getting the wrong meanings of Gurbani.

The wrong translations have been used and distributed far and wide with the use of apps.

These need to be corrected. Only God knows how many other wrong translations of the bani have been done. Please be alert and inform as many people as possible especially the people who make those apps.

I am still looking for the best translation. The point of the matter here is that this mistake is not an ordinary mistake. Even a person with little knowledge of Gurmukhi could easily see through that home has not been mentioned anywhere in the line sun galla akas ki kita aai riis.

Why should the translator have gotten it so wrong.

Frankly I have been expecting to get some serious response from the people who are directly responsible for supplying us online English translations.

I will try and get into contact with someone and try to resolve the matter. There could be many other mistakes. When we are not reading or trying to understand with complete concentration, we can get the meaning completely wrong. We use the wrong things in our arguments.

For instance the other line which goes like sael matar me jant upaye ta ka rijak aage aage kar dhariaa - From rocks and stones, He created the

living beings, and He places before them their sustenance -- the meaning of the line has changed completely.

Someone with no Punjabi knowledge can easily be confused as to what is actually being said here.

All we can do is mark the mistakes and hope someone will correct them especially in the Dr Sant Singh Khalsa translations in the Sri Granth. There is an option on the top right hand side corner to change the translations to Bhai Manmohan Singh Ji. It is advisable to change the settings.

Any doubts in meanings should also be cleared by checking out the meaning in punjabi or asking a giani Ji or other person. We all make mistakes. However I would have thought that whoever was going to publish the translations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib would have been extra careful to get it checked out. Despite the fact that there are mistakes it is still there online.

I now study all translations especially in English with great concentration and always alert to catch another mistake. Combined effort should help weed out more mistakes.

Penji Sikhni777 I tried the method you said clicking the other option and there isn't a difference in the latest Gurbani I posted, I think in one it says insane and the other mad . Unless I'm missing something, sometimes I forget to use the click option, sorry ji if I've posted wrong. I never noticed the other available options, thank you ji for pointing them out.

But in future I will bear this in mind and check both translations.now I'm thinking which ones are best to post?

There are not mistakes everywhere. But these two as you can see are quite serious.

Penji I don't understand, how are they different? Insane and mad have the same definition when you look them up.

Hanji I understand this now. I think I've come across few lines where the one or two words will not match the translated word, not the whole line though, therefore sometimes it's easy to miss.

The best thing is to learn Punjabi and not rely on translations. Translations can never do justice to the depth of Gurbani, the meanings are simply watered down and no matter how learned the translator they do not do justice to Gurbani and Anand cannot be experienced in the same fashion.

Reading a translation is akin to snorkelling as opposed to diving in and getting full laha.

Another one - the above reads correctly and is by Bhai Manmohan Singh. However below the one by Dr Sant Singh Khalsa has changed the meaning completely.

Yes we should learn punjabi to get to know the exact meanings. The problem here however is that the English translations are changing the meanings of the lines completely and putting across a wrong message.
