Domestic Violence Among Muslims

Recommended Posts

I wonder if domestic violence is higher among Muslims then any other religious group

I think that stage has passed for them. Their society is settled. Men and women seem to know their respective roles. Thing with Muslim women is that a lot of them explicitly know that western feminism isn't a part of their culture/religion.

Plus with cousin marriage, it becomes less acceptable to batter your missus because now you have cross dimensional relationships in a family, and more people would intervene from within the family. I think there is less chance of some women coming into a family being seen as some outsider.

It could be a bigger issue if you include all those Islamic nations from the rich nations to the poor nations. Also we should know that their entire religion was created from a man who married a 9 year-old when he was in his 40's-50's, (not to mention he himself had more than the Islamic max of 4). So I'd say yes.

There is lot of domestic violence among Muslims! LOL if someone says that stage has passed for them or they know role of men and women.

Every day there are such cases in India, Pakistan and other South Asian countries.

Maybe you guys live abroad which is why you assume there is no problem, or is there fascination with Islam's backward, tribal culture in the name of "culture and traditional roles" here?

Feminism has nothing to do with domestic violence. Domestic violence has always existed. It existed even before men and women ventured out of so called traditional roles!

Thing is, you see our own pendus b1tch-slapping their wives too. Ok, not as much as in my parent generation but are we saying that this doesn't happen in our society, especially the more backwards parts?

I'm sure if you compare almost 30 million Sikhs to 1.5 billion Muslims the Muslims would obviously have more domestic violence, if you compared the most devout Sikhs to most devout Muslims there would still be more domestic violence amongst the Muslims, because of their religion explicitly supporting such a thing. (If you compared the least religious Sikhs to the least religious Muslims however, the results would then show that Sikhs have slightly more, only slightly more than non-religious Muslims).

I don't disagree with problems our community has. Both men and women are responsible for it. These days even kids and teens have been wreaking havoc.

I just countered your comment on Muslims. Your post seems to suggest they have passed that stage or their community doesn't have this issue. This is untrue. They have domestic violence too.

I am not saying we don't have problems. I am saying they have it too.

You should publish your findings in a journal.

I tell you one big difference between the communities - drink.

Back in the days when some 'uncle' would go off on his missus (and it wasn't uncommon), it was usually after a few drinks. So I'd say we have more alcohol related cases of domestic abuse than them.

All I was trying to say was we can't compare 30 million Sikhs to 1.5 billion Muslims due to an insane population difference.

You started training yet mate? If not, you should worry about that more than stuff like this.

I don't understand why the original question was posed? What a thing to wonder about? Is it a desire for one-upmanship that prompts such questioning or perhaps a nagging guilt that the petitioner is less than comfortable with what he sees from those in his own family or community? And as for the ludicrous answers suggesting that Islam sanctions domestic violence, please consult your sources (translations and interpretations of Islamic scripture) and understand that the only recourse to violence a man has against his wife is the symbolic act of tapping her with a miswak (small twig) and even that is the LAST option he is allowed to exercise for a wife who is guilty of lewd conduct and a breach of spousal loyalty. If we are to accept that Sikhs who beat their wives do so out of the fold of Sikhism, we must accept the same for Muslims too.

Wow !!! :omg: Can there possibly be a more casteist person on sikhsangat than Dallysingh101?

Look back at his posts. It doesn't matter if the thread is about cars, Punjab, cakes or space travel.....the man will ALWAYS.....WITHOUT FAIL.... find a reason within it to put down Sikhs who come from a rural background. The man is totally shameless.

But....even more than shame is his ignorance.

For example, it would be really interesting too get inside his head and see how he can shamelessly attribute domestic violence at the feet of the rural Sikhs while completely ignoring these facts:

  1. The newpapers every single day in Punjab are full of stories about rural women murdering their husbands (usually for extra-marital affairs) and urban husbands and families setting fire to their wife/daughter in law (usually for lack of dowry)
  2. The urban Sikhs, as a rule, believe that Sikhism is only for men because women lack the intellect and other aspects needed to be a Sikh whilst this is a concept and state of affairs totaly alien among the rural Sikhs as they have a cultue whereby the women work and fight as much as the men, ie...the urban lot mentally enslave them (before regularly setting them on fire) whereas the rural lot emancipate them.
  3. The one and only group of Sikhs in the UK that have the most oppressive attitude towards their women, and keep this oppressive order through intimidation, fear andd violence, are the bhatras.....and they, of course, are 100% from urban stock as they do not exist as a rule in rural areas. This urban group is the one that will not allow their daughters to study at university and will not allow their women to go out in public without a veil of some sorts.

So what exactly is it that goes through dallysingh101's mind where he can blank his mind from actual reality and continously, thread after thread, perpetuate his vitriolic prejudice against rural sikhs ?
