Guru Gobind Singh ji and The Donkey.

One day, Guru Gobind Singh ji was walking through the city of Anandpur. Suddenly, the air was shattered by the long, exhausted braying of the donkey that belonged to the vegetable stall-holder in the market. Burdened down by its heavy load, thirsting for water in the mid-day heat, the donkey was wailing its hardship. But the locals were used to it. They heard it everyday. They mocked and laughed at the stupid donkey.

But the Guru felt pity for the animal. 'If that were the roar of a tiger, they would not laugh' he thought. The thought put an idea in his head. At home he had the gift of a tiger skin, given him months ago. He had some friends bring the donkey to him. He led the animal home, fed and watered it, then gently laid the tiger's skin along its back. Back to the village he led it and let it roam free.

The donkey was amazed. Everywhere he went, now, a path was cleared for him. Women and children, rushed from him screaming; the men cowered in corners. Even the other animals kept their distance, jumping out of the way in fear. Soon, the donkey was alone in the market. Even his master ran when he saw him, but he left those lovely piles of apples and carrots. Soon the donkey was having the feast of a lifetime. It was hard for the donkey to understand because until today, he was beaten if he so much as sniffed at the fruit and vegetables.

But the city was terrified. They had to be rid of the dangerous tiger wandering round the market. No-one was safe. They must drive it back to the forest. The problem was to find a way and a meeting was called to solve the problem. At the meeting, the Guru had an idea. He would frighten the tiger and they could drive it before them, back into the forest. So it was agreed.

Soon the drum beats echoed round the market place bewildering the poor donkey. This way and that it turned, then beat a retreat as far into the forest as it could, anywhere away from the noise. His whole body shivered in a panic. He gave voice to his fear in a loud, quivering bray. The hunters stopped. They could not believe their ears. 'But that is no tiger.' they shouted to one another. 'Surely, that is only the vegetable donkey from the market.' Slowly they approached. In a clearing, the donkey stood staring at them nervously, the skin of a tiger hanging caught on the branch of a shrub.

Slowly, the Guru soothed the frightened animal, smoothing its head and ears with his hand. 'Remember, the vegetable donkey' he told the people. 'He wore the skin of a tiger, but he had only the spirit and actions of a donkey.'

seems shortened ... Guru ji says people see , when he wore the bhes of a sher everyone was scared of his actions thinking they would be of a sher yet no was nothing more than a donkey in nature and when the people saw that the fear was gone , do not be bheki Singhs but have the actions and thoughts of a gursikh too lest you be berated and mistreated like this poor creature .

On the day of Gobind Rai's birth, Bhikan Shah, a Muslim Pir who lived in the Punjab, did a very curious thing. He bowed to the east instead of to the west towards Mecca. His followers were shocked and asked him why he was doing this. See also Pir Bhikan Shah and the Two Pots of Sweets.

He replied, "God has come to the Earth in Patna."

He vowed to go worship the new-born saint, and would perform a daily fast until he saw him. He made the very long journey to Patna and arrived there exhausted and weak with hunger. When he came to the Guru's house, he asked to see the child. The Guru's mother and grandmother were cautious and sent word to the Pir that he should come back in three months.

He said he would sit, fast, and wait.

After two days, he was still there. Finally, Mata Gujari ji was moved by his devotion and allowed him to come in and present his offerings. The Pir brought in his presents and bowed low to the little child.

Then he did a very strange thing. He put two identical covered pots in front of the boy, and sat back and waited.

The child looked into the Pir's eyes, smiled, and touched both of the pots. The Pir smiled back at him and prepared to leave.

When the Sikhs and his followers asked him what he meant by this, he replied, "In one pot were sweets made by a Hindu sweetmaker, and in the other pot by a Muslim sweetmaker.

By putting his hands on both pots, the Guru will give equal respect to both Hindus and Muslims, and again the question was which faith did Guru ji favour ? and the jawab was both are equally loved by Akal Purakh. So saying, he blessed the child and returned home, remaining a steadfast supporter of the Guru for his entire life.

He replied, "On this day, a beloved of God has been born who will be both a saint and a hero."

this seems a little off Pir Bhikan Shah actually said 'God has come to the Earth in Patna' .... which nowadays muslims will object to (as then as blasphemy) and again the question was which faith did Guru ji favour ? and the jawab was both are equally loved by Akal Purakh ....not that both will be included in his new religion (propaganda for those who say sikhi is milgoba of the two faiths)... See we need to be very wary of what we pass forward to others as it can take them away from faith in Sikhi (if it is a mix then it has nothing new to show me)

it's Ok a few years back I would have just accepted whatever i read because it comes from a sikh source but now I realise Sikhs are not just SIkhs but can be conduits of RSS /muslim propaganda.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
