Please dont blame Gurbani when you dont understand it. That state of nothing matters is referred to those who are steeped in naam.

Gun Gobinnd gayeo nahi janam akarath kin.

What matters very greatly in Gurbani, in each and every written line is whether you have spent any time in your life doing naam simran.

so you need to study Gurbani and not blame it for it is the Guru.

Bani Guru Guru hai Bani.

vaho vaho bani Nirankaar hai

If you want to meet God then you need to read bani and put all your doubts aside.

The idea of the world not existing is mostly a state of mind, felt by people with bhagti.

If you are feeling like that, make sure you are not going through depression. Yhat is when you get the feeling that nothing matters.

To whomsoever you are, Sat Sree Akal.

I am going to answer you at the best of my humble ability in your post:

does anything matter in this life?? good or bad.?

Yes it does matter, as the Bani says: aapay beejeh, apaay khaae. You plant seeds of good karmas, you shall reap goodness; you plant seeds of bad karmas, one reaps, pain and suffering.

As simple as that, this is how creation goes on. Wahiguru does not punish or reward anybody just like that, everything happens as per His Hukum, which the wise nature carries on diligently and faithfully, without any mistakes.

But yes, if you look and search for Him alone, then of course, He will take a thousand steps towards us, and make all arangements in order to fulfill this our desire, again as per laws of Nature, through Gurbani.

gurbani says nothing is real etc,

That is True what Gurbani says, that nothing is real. But in the sense, that, nothing is everlasting, that is why it is fanah, it is koor, it is mitheeya.

The Bani says: ekas(Wahiguru) bin, sabh dandh hae ...

The mool mantar says: Ik Oankar, Satnam. This means: There is only one everlasting (Sat) Truth, which is Wahiguru, in His swaroop as Nam, though as, Satnam.

but then if nothing is real ,is what we do real ,does it matter?whether we do good or bad,if we are happy or un happy,if someone causes us heartache or makes us smile, what matters !!??

What we do, of course it does matter, as it comes back to us as a boomerang. Otherwise, if it was not so, the creation would be full of chaos and unjustice. And moreover in any case, whatever er perceive as bad, even that has a touch of His aparampaar Grace, because then, we by tasting the bittrness of our bitter karmas, in next birts, we will tend to avoid any such karma, which will bring us pain and suffering.

And unless we learn this lesson, that Wahiguru is all goodness, thus to merge in Him, we have also to become spotless, avoid bad karam, ultimately also arise over the barrier of good karmas, and seroiusly engage in what the Bani tells us to do, which is His simran.

Because, then only we shall obtain mukti, not otherwise, for as the Bani says : Prabh ka simran, garb na baseh. Which means do His chintan, His Simran, and you shall never come into a mother´s womb.

And it is a pity, that even the learned so called scholars, gyanis and the simple people, fail to understand the utmost Truth, in the simplicty of the Bani. They also get entangled and lost by the brahmanvadee multiplicty / variety /anekta, introduced unconscioussly into their perception of Sikhee, thus the esence, the tat, the truth of Wahiguru, given to us by our Guru Sahibans is lost of sight, and then too we proudly proclaim we are sikhs, and start abusing anyone, with whom our way of thinking does not match.

Wahiguru has given us reasoning sense / budh/ chit, so that we do not blindly do anything just as a ritual, but to see the purpose of it, and the objective derived or achieved in doing so.

As children, we are taught A B C D ....in the kindergarden; but as we grow, we do not keep repeating them untl we die, but rather, to form a habit in us, to get used to them and their utility, and use to form words with meaning, thus learn also the different subjects, master them and one day become a graduate ...This is the purpose of education, and not to just keep repeating A, B , C, D ..... to Z , and then again and again.

This only shows, how dumb and obstinate we are, and it does not matter at all then, how clean we put our uniforms, take our bag full of books / crayons / pencils...etc .

Our learning process has nothing to do with it. It is our attention, our concentration, on what the Teacher is telling us to do at each step, which will take us to higher levels.

If we just keep on repeating A B C D till Z, all the time for hours and hours, then when the hell will we get time to grow and mature, and learn further more, to ever become a graduate?

Which was the purpose of our parents, by putting us in the kindergarden.... To understand the teachings gradually taught to us, and doing the homework upon what we are taught, lies our growth, maturity and welfare.

Sat Sree Akal.

i have been diagnosed with depression, but have been feeling better

are these not normalfeelings to have now and again ,,?

It takes time to recover from any type of depression. If you are turning to bani then you are doing very well, because bani is the cure of all diseases. sarab rog ka aukadh naam.

I would advise you to keep doing path and your state of mind will slowly recover.

Always remember to stick to it. These sort of feelings take time to slowly dissappear. They will eventually dissappear and then you will be seeing the world in a new light.

I don't know if anything matters, but searching for a higher meaning(as a Sikh) is the best effort I can make. The alternative and pessimistic option is nihilism and that view of the universe is unjustifiably adamant in saying that there is no purpose. The way I see it, the living man/woman only has the option to search, and if you don't, you might as well consider yourself dead.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਮੁਏ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

Those who forget the Naam are already dead, and they continue dying.
