Why Nanaksar Ragiis Are Celibate

Recommended Posts

This is your opinion, not Gurmat.

Which of our Gurus were celibate (exempting the eighth and eleventh patshaahs from this question for obvious reasons)? Which Guru did not live within grishti jeevan? How many of the great Gursikhs of our history, whose devotion to the Guru was beyond all reproach, were celibates?

The answers to these three questions are, respectively, none, none, and very, very few.

Sexual intercourse does not automatically equal lust. Our own Guru Sahibaan had children and they accomplished this using the traditional method. Will anyone dare to say that the Gurus, because they coupled with their wives, committed acts of lust? I think not. Lust is an obsessive preoccupation with matters of sex. Sikhi's opposition to lust is not a prohibition upon any and all sexual activity whatsoever.

If someone is completely devoted to Guru Ji they will be celibate. is what I said Bhaji... clearly stating that celibacy applies to everyone else exempting the Gurus. The Gurus were able to lead grisht jeevan without falling into the same types of attachments which we are prone to falling into. A soul which has not quite reached that sort of perfection may like to get rid of all distractions and devote all their time to bhagti as much as possible.

A normal person when they get children will obviously stop or reduce doing their path to some extent. The Gurus however were above this as Guru Nanak Dev ji left behind his family to go and preach all over the Indian continent. Guru Gobind Singh Ji sacrificed his sons in war and said ... jeevat kei hazaar. A normal person cannot reach to this level. When our kids are sick or get hurt we go through lots more of pain than they actually are suffering. We are still striving to reach that level of perfection.

Keeping sexual relations within your marriage will help keep lust in control as being with the same partner does reduce initial excitement and curiosity to a great extent. Some people unfortunately look at this as a weakness and try to be promiscuous in order to create more excitement falling victim to lust. In marriage the relationship is more of a commitment to being sensitive to your partners needs and mutual content which is a definition and expression of love - a more exact description of how Waheguru wants us to use our bodies for sexual relations.

One case in history which stands out however is of Banda Singh Bahadur who was told specifically not to get married by Gur Gobind Singh Ji. He disobeyed and the result was not good for him. He was captured and pieces of his own son placed into his mouth. This was however in the war times we may argue.

Do you have any Gurbani quotes whatsoever or are you just saying stuff?

If every Sikh became celibate there will be no Sikhs left.

Good point - don't worry. There are quotes on lust though. Lust is different from procreation.

Why did Mata Ganga have to go to Baba Buda Ji for blessings to get a son ..... the taking of life and giving it is not in our hands.

How was Jesus born when Joseph did not come to meet Mary.

That is besides the point anyway. We are not saying love and sex is bad. We are here talking about lust which can become an obsession and waste life. The following is what Gurbani says about LUST (and sex outside marriage) not sex in married life... so Gursikho keep on multiplying peacefully.

Many people especially youngsters learn about sexual matters from films, gossip, loose characters and maybe parents too never get to explain the right attitude. People indulge in porn, promiscuity, cheating on their partners and portraying a loose character and still consider themselves to be Sikhs.

These lines are meant to educate you what your own Gurbani says about these matters. Most people do not bother to study or just do not know. Many are stuck with the complete wrong attitudes thinking that what they are doing is right and this is what it means to be westernised. These lines are meant to show you what Guru Ji says about such behaviors.

Wasting your time and energy on these things and not doing any simran is what the result of these activities is. So we need to devote time to simran so that we can be saved from these vices. Only the naam can save you - nothing else.

Sikhni777 penji with all due respect to you , but you are talking about lust only.

Celibacy does not mean lust alone. Look up the definition of celibacy and as below, most dictionaries will state the below, which includes not marrying.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/celibacy

celibacy Translate Button

[sel-uh-buh-see]

noun

1.

abstention from sexual relations.

2.

abstention by vow from marriage:

the celibacy of priests.

Simran penji imagine a seesaw with celibacy on one side and lust at the other. If they balance none wins. The lighter side goes up. If lust decreases with the practice of simran celibacy is possible. If lust increases then celibacy is not possible and people back out and get married or whatever else they be influenced to do.
