Why Nanaksar Ragiis Are Celibate

Recommended Posts

Simran penji imagine a seesaw with celibacy on one side and lust at the other. If they balance none wins. The lighter side goes up. If lust decreases with the practice of simran celibacy is possible. If lust increases then celibacy is not possible and people back out and get married or whatever else they be influenced to do.

bhen ji true all Kaam( root Kaamna - desires) finishes when the true manzil draws nearer but the aim is NOT to become celibate but detached from the lower vibrations of the physical world in general this includes egotistic thinking, worldly attachment, etc so that one can be free and more attached to Naam . Guru ji gave adesh to have family life be in the world , work, and do normal duties not run away from responsibilities of life like nange sadh etc , make the world better by spreading naam and defending the weak and oppressed . It was never a choice between two lifestyles but 4 varna in one person and sant and sipahi in the same person. We are made complete by following Guru ji's advice and kirpa will come according to hukam. I am sure there are hundreds of thousands of bibian who didn't get married because of Kaam but out of duty ... we have to keep the panth going by bringing new people into the world that is just the way of things .

Those who choose of their own volition because of avasta development level is different, to those who only follow a maryada because the second group may not be fully at that avasta level...and thenthey abuse the trust of younger/ naive people of either sex leading to distrust of all amritdharis etc ...this has to be avoided.

No penji, I will not imagine this seasaw of yours, because the Gurus did not advocate celibacy, nor did they say not to get married or to not have families. You should imagine somebody advocating celibacy when they themselves are married with a family. That's hypocritical to say that.

I agree with what Jkvlondon penji has wrote, our inspiration are the Gurus who did have families. If somebody wants to be a celibate, then so be it, according to one's karm, bhagti and Waheguru's Hukam one becomes a celibate, but please don't use Gurbani to make out that's what we should do. Guru ji talks about the 5 vices (chor) Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh and Ahankar. Where do they say one should not get married?

The way God had made us is what we should accept and to work on improving ourselves for the better so that we do not drown by the 5 vices. Read Sidh Gosht, which portrays what Jkvlondon penji is saying.

Dear penjis I am not trying to tell others to be celibate. Its just an exploration of why people turn that way. Apologies if you think it directly applies to you. Its a topic which people have tried to explore in the past too.

Thank you penji, for explaining that.

Perhaps the conclusion here is that Celibates are themselves already married spiritually. Marriage is a core concept in Gurbani. Suhagni is menioned time and again. Celibates are people who have the best marriage of all marriages. The marriage with God himself. If you are already married to the creator - who else can you get married to. It is when you are married that you get everything which you ever desired for. It is also when you are married that you are able to understand what your husband Waheguru wills every second of the day.

The concept of marriage to an individual is just a journey for us in order to understand what it is to get married to God in the end.

can some one tell me why ragiis of nanaksar are celibate. also why they have diffrent maryada.

Sant Sujan Singh were Grehasti & top most Raagi during Baba Nand Singh ji time.

Now when it came to succession there were two candidates Baba Isher Singh ji & Sant Sujan Singh.

As a test Sant Sujan Singh was asked if he will consider

MAYA as GA

&

RANN as MA

That is, taking money from Sangat was equivalent to eating cow (forbidden),

To treat wife as a mother (no sexual relation)

Being a Grehasti he could not !

I have been thinking that Punj Guru Piyaras were Celibate then why celibacy isn't considered a key characteristic while selecting Panch ?

Celibacy seems to be a buddhist concept where Buddha thought it best that his Bhikshus become celibates. This Buddhist concept then seems to have influenced Hinduism which in turn later influenced Sikhi. Otherwise there is nothing in the teachings of the Gurus or even of the Bhagat Sahibaan which encourages celibacy. That is why almost all Sikh Saints have lived Grahisti jeevan.

Celibacy is the easy way. Anyone can become celibate and follow Sikhi. But real challenge is to follow Sikhi while living Grahisti jeevan. Real challenge is to not indulge in kaam then, or not to get krodh when your kids annoy you or spouse argues with you after a long hard day at work. Or how about doing bhagti and paath, keeping amritvela while living a family life.

There are so many pressures in grahisti jeevan that celibacy does not even compare. That is why it is said following Sikhi is like walking the razors edge. Anyone can follow Sikhi if they are celibate. But only a really dedicated person follows Sikhi while living Grahisti jeevan.

but gautam buddha was also grahsthi married to Yashodara who was his bhua ji's daughter when they were 16 and had a child with her at age 29 before he left his princely position ...also I have heard that he was reluctant to let women into his dharma and when he did he said that he had shortened the dharma lifespan ....methinks he was very Hindu in outlook on many things still ...
