Why Do Some Sikhs Wear Kalgis On Their Wedding Days?

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh! I wanted to know why some people wear Kalgis on their wedding day, also a side-question; why shouldn't we wear a Kalgi if we are children of Guru Sahib, (since he's the highest king, and Kalgi is a sign of royalty)?

Punjabi Tradition just like putting Garland around the couple. We are no on the track of Sikhi. I know they have to take this Tiarra off before they enter the Gurdwara and somewhere in the late 80's The Garlands were not permitted inside the Guru Ghar. It could also be macho male chauvinist. I don't know now but what you speak of was like in the 70's. The women also used cover their whole face during a wedding and when meeting an older male member of the family. The women would cover their whole faces very similar to a Burka. This could have been because of Muslim in joint Punjab. We have lost our Guru and joined with other traditions. Like Hindu worship or in the west Christmas Trees and etc.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh! (I personally don't know anyone who puts a Kalgi on their wedding, but I know from online discussions that some people do)

I don't think I could answer your second question because I was so young in the 70's. Then moved to Canada in the mid 70's. All I know that my father was a Granthi at some Gurdwara in the Vancouver Area. The Kalgdhi was taken off before entering the Gurdwara. These traditions of taking off and not putting the Garlands around the necks of the couple I only saw the changes here as I was growing up. As it seems that the Punjabi tradition has made its way here in Canada example riding horses and these maya things. You know that 99.9% of Punjabi is willing to go bankrupt to marry their child off. Kind of sick. Sikhi is not Punjabi Tradition.

As far as I know back in the day when SInghs were actually SInghs in warfare etc they would wear full bana including proper rehit of two kirpans , soni dastar/dumalla and chand to get married they would arrive on Horseback as was in keeping with mentality of Guru de ladle - not like average peasant on baal gaddi arriving to the wedding . The point is the rehit went but the reesa didn't , now you see bewakoofs trying to sit on a horse when they've never ridden in their life, stubble faced with a sherwani on and pagg with kalgi and sera ...I'm sure sera is a hindu and muslim custom to stop buri nazar ...holding a 3 foot kirpan ...

Oh the shame of it ...

in seventies all the bridegrooms in punjab did all the soorma sera , Kalgian,ghordian ...now the trads are all intermingled and confused and no one knows why they are doing' it's just it the way it's supposed to be done' , or 'it's good luck innit'

The Kalgi is removed before coming into the presence of Guru ji as no one is higher than Guru ji .
