21st Century-- Transition From Fossil Fuels To Renewable Sources Inevitable!

“One way or another, we are going to get off of fossil fuels this century,” journalist and educator Richard Heinberg has said. “The question is, how are we going to do it? Are we going to do it in some kind of planned and managed way? Or is it going to be a series of economic and environmental catastrophes?”
Petroleum is essential to the world economy and there is no ready and sufficient substitute, Heinberg said. The potential consequences of peak oil include prolonged economic crisis and resource wars.“This is probably going to be a crisis-led transition,” he said. “On a finite planet, nothing grows forever.”
“As the era of cheap, abundant fossil fuels comes to an end, our assumptions about continued expansion are being be shaken to their core,” Heinberg said. “We can survive the end of growth, but only if we recognize it for what it is and act accordingly.

Transition to a non-fossil fuel based economy, sooner or later, is inevitable. The question is how could that be achieved in time to address the hazards on the horizon? Is it feasible? How could that be pursued in a meaningful way? What political and other obstacles need to be overcome to get to a truly renewable economy?
