Sikh interracial marriages

A lot of this is based on some level of virtue signalling and partly on some LARPing fantasy.

We can't even point to the overwhelming exposure of the ceremony in Punjabi popular culture as to why it's become such a non-negotiable aspect of a Sikh female's marriage reel, lol. Sure, there's depictions of it but I never realised it was so integral to their idea of a perfect day. 

I think it might have something to do with the physical circumnavigation of Guru Sahib by the bride. Perhaps the repetitive and drawn out nature of the 4 laava means they realise all the attention is on them for a while. Maybe it gives them an opportunity to flex their lengha?

Hmmm...maybe I'm bang out of order, but perhaps a method of restoring -- publicly at least -- some of that virginal bridal lustre that she discarded a while ago? Shuffling around the holy Sikh scriptures might be considered to be a transactional act of contrition and forgiveness? I doubt they could or ever knowingly would articulate it in this manner but it's not hard to imagine something like that might be going on subconsciously.

Girls fantasise about their 'perfect wedding' from childhood. This is how they have imagined it for decades I guess?

It's the selective aspect of it that's perplexing. For them, the Anand Karaj HAS to occur in its authentic form even if it's with a non-Sikh. P!us, they've been raised in a Western environment where much of that culture has superceded the predominant parts of their ethnic heritage so you'd guess even the marriage rites would be affected on that basis. But no, lol, the flowing white wedding gown and the elegant Christian ceremony seems to leave apniyan cold; they want the laava and the rest of it. What's going on? What's the thought processes behind it? Why reject other aspects of their culture while retaining this one? Is it really as basic as a Bollywood cosplay?

Family pressure also

I think in some cases where they marry a Hindu, the family might think it's less likely to be obvious the spouse is not Sikh, and that the Anand Karaj will make up for not marrying an actual Sikh. Gurdwara committees are complicit in this as it's a big source of income. 

 Marrying out is still considered disreputable by many families I know, however

Some women, from what I've seen, have both. The red dress at the Gurdwara and the white one at the registry. I think it's as simple as you say, dress up and photo ops.  Being the centre of attention. 

Most people don't give this any deep thought. It's just a ceremony that they've witnessed and dreamed about since childhood.

Plus, white dress makes them look darker, so they like the colors.

Better to have Registry marriage than sully Anand Karaj.
