Digital heroin emerging major threat among mobile crazy youth

AMRITSAR: Not only the substance addiction is taking lives of Punjabi youth but with the vast popularity and unabated use of internet, the screen addiction has also emerged as a potent threat for people of all age groups using mobile phones, which is causing major behavioral disorders as well as impotency.

"There are over a dozen patients, with majority of young girls undergoing treatment of behaviour disorder in our internet deaddiction centre," said addiction psychiatrist Dr. JPS Bhatia while talking to TOI on Friday.

Stating that benefits of social networking was far less than its harmful effects, Bhatia said it was hiding one's own true identity under the garb of a pleasing activity.

He said that parents approach with sudden fall in grades of their children while wives complain about their husbands neglecting them.

Among youth, the symptoms of screen addiction includes unconsciously looking at mobile phone, hand movement towards phone, relationship problems with immediate family members and living in a dream-like state. Giving example, Bhatia said that parent of one of his patients reported that their son spends hours in bathroom.

Vaishali (name changed), mother of a 15-year-old girl screen addict, said, "I was worried to find major changes in my daughter's behaviour. She would spend at least three to four hours in bathroom and when I clandestinely checked her mobile, it was full of porn stuff and more than one hundred male Facebook friends that was an alarming call."

Bhatia said that among adult males, erectile malfunction was a major symptom. "When husband and wife are using cell phone, they feel they are being neglected. This emptiness leads to marital disharmony," he said.

Notably, a recently released government data had disclosed Amritsar as the top city among others for sharing sexual abuse material. According to the data, Amritsar took top place with more than 4.3 lakh "files of interest" - code for child porn - shared between July 1, 2016 to January 15, 2017. While Delhi was second in the slot followed by Lucknow.

Talking about the treatment part, he said at the internet deaddiction centre, they give life skills counselling and advise on inculcating good habits while the male adults were made to realize the importance of real relations over the fantasy world of pornography.

While agreeing to the addiction caused by mobile phones and excessive use of internet, medical superintendent Guru Nanak Dev Medical Hospital Dr. Ram Saroop said that over-dependence on mobile phones was causing frustration among youth and related disorders.

Bhatia suggested to develop "role models" at the school level as the first measure to check the impending threat of screen addiction. "Students follow their teachers and if the teachers will keep the mobiles away, they will learn the same."

You've got to be kidding me. Say no more. I don't even want to think about it. I wish I could say I'm surprised but I'm not.

I can bet other groups have bigger problems with it; here is the thing, anything a Punjabi, (Hindu, Muslim, or Sikh), does something wrong it becomes news. Whenever a Gora, Khala, Oriental, Hispanic, or other Subcontinentals do something wrong, it's like a series of a daily thing, (it's expected for them to be immoral).

Digital addiction is a real threat, which we in developing countries ignore. Our children, in developed countries are not immune to it either. We have the false mentality that if we expose our children to the computer, ipad and TV, they will end up more intelligent and knowledgeable. However we are totally unaware of the waves which are penetrating into their bodies, brain and other body parts.

I see children in the guradwara being handed over their mums mobile phones which they hold to their heads and keep them close to their bodies. In the short run, we are just trying to keep them quiet. In the long run we have robbed them of the opportunity to experience kirtan because their mind is tuned to the device. Any chance then that the child will go on to school with attention problems because we have not given them the opportunity to just sit and listen.

The amount of digital usage in schools is appalling too. The children stare onto the white board and read and copy stuff from there. In our days - watching films was a treat. These days it is as essential as food itself. The amount of cartoons and other fast moving images which our children watch affects brain development. We even have to teach them the alphabet using alphablocks.

Working with paper and pencil seems boring to some kids. Therefore this digital addiction can just be a silent bomb waiting to explode on us. Speech and behaviour problems are the result of such exposure. This can be the case where the TV and other digital devices are used as baby sitting helpers for long periods of time.

Yeah i think digital addiction is bad enough for adults but for kids its even worse as it inhabits brain development through lack of sleep and attention deficiency. Alot of the youngsters these days get bored very easily anything that is in a book is just not as exciting or interesting to them as the moving images, video sounds on tablets and phones. It leads to a range of mental health and behavioral problems.

Also there is another problem, the brainwashing of punjabi youth through dangerous ideologies like atheism and islam by videos. We have seen western born young muslim and white kids get groomed by isis propaganda or extremist muslim videos so they start hating non-muslims and non-muslim societies. Our punjabi boys tend not be be easily groomed and converted by such filth as they usually very pro-sikh and anti-islam but punjabi girls are easily groomed and very naive in how the real world works they been brainwashed by leftist marxist sarbat da bhalla type liberals meaning they have no real love or loyalty to sikhi or punjabi/sikh males.

Punjabi girls are copying western style revealing clothing, makeup and hairstyles thinking if they dont they are backwards or will be made fun of. What they dont realise is that girls who dress modestly and behave modestly get the most respect and girls who dont are the ones every guy wants to use and abuse for short term but long term they want someone decent with a good rep to breed with and bring into the family home.

Propaganda online by atheists and abrahmics (christians and muslims) is vastly available on social media grooming our community to think a certain way. I realised this issue in another topic few weeks ago and the Sikhs community needs to start producing their own propaganda material to brain cleanse and convert people to sikhi. I saw one muslim girl complain her bro was brainwashed by basicsofsikhi videos to become a sikh that made me laugh a little but also open my eyes to how powerful the power of new digital media is getting even born muslims to become Sikhs through knowledge and parchar by sikhs online. There was even an arab guy on facebook living in kuwait who started to recite japji sahib and doesnt look sikh on the outside but is a a sikh in the inside as he stated he is a sikh now.

Everyday is a battle is a war of propaganda and idea's. As Sikhs we need to make sure we are winning that war and everyday we battle against anything non-sikhi we see brainwashing our youth. We need to ensure pro-sikh parchar is done in good and positive way so that they don't get further pushed into the camps of the non-sikh ideologies.

problem with most sikh parents is they just see others give their kids mobiles computers etc so monkey see monkey do without monitoring usage or thinking just what they are exposing their kids to. Those who are techsavvy will put in the protections and controls but this kind of knowledge is not common on the ground . We need to provide classes for parents in gurdwara and maybe local schools (on volunteer basis) to ensure parents know how to protect their kids from grooming(religious and sexual) and cyberbullying  apart from access to inappropriate websites .

I've been reading about the current trend of groomers invading online games and chatting to younger children .It's is seriously creepy.

BUT the main form of indoctrination that people ignore is the screen in the corner of their living rooms, the level of undermining of familial values, self--esteem of minorities and children is immense and subtle. This dripdrip effect is making our kids ashamed of not being the same as the other atheist, sex-chasing kids, of looking different, of having pride in their own history/culture.

introducing technology to young kids actually hardwires them to be unable to process information coming in at the normal hearing , reading channels , the kids can only process info at alpha wave level which is trance state, also teir patience levels go out of the window as they want instant gratification...this is not helpful for real-life situations and learning. Being reactive in the extreme means thinking is crowded out
