Australian women sue over Qatar airport strip-searches

A group of Australian women who were strip-searched and examined at Doha airport are suing authorities in Qatar.

The women were ordered off a flight and checked for whether they had given birth after a baby was found in a bin at Hamad Airport in October 2020.

They described their experience as state-sanctioned assault and the incident sparked widespread outrage.

Qatar later apologised and one airport official was handed a suspended jail sentence.

But the women say their cases have since been ignored.

They were taken off the Qatar Airways plane by armed guards before being taken into ambulances on the tarmac where they were inspected by nurses.

The women said they did not consent to the examinations and were not given explanations for what was happening to them.

One of the women, who did not want to be named, told the BBC she was "subjected to the most horrifically invasive physical exam".

"I was certain that I was either going to be killed by one of the many men that had a gun, or that my husband on the plane was going to be killed," she said in a statement from her lawyer.

The examinations lasted about five minutes before they were escorted back to their flight.

Several women reported the incident to police after landing in Australia, sparking public attention and condemnation from several nations.

At the time, Qatar's Prime Minister Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani tweeted an apology saying: "We regret the unacceptable treatment of the female passengers... What took place does not reflect Qatar's laws or values."

The Gulf state launched a criminal prosecution which led to a suspended jail term for an airport official.

But Damian Sturzaker, a lawyer for seven of the women, told the BBC they had been "met with a wall of silence" despite trying to engage with the Qatari authorities.

They want a formal apology from Qatar and the airport to change its procedures to make sure the incident does not happen again, Mr Sturzaker said.

The women are seeking damages and allege assault, battery, trespass and false imprisonment by the Qatari government, Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority and Qatar Airways.

One of the women- who she had recurring flashbacks and nightmares about the incident - said the alleged lack of action from the Qatari authorities had spurred the women to take action.

"By speaking up, we want to ensure that no woman is ever subjected to the demoralising, horrendous treatment we were subjected to," she said.

Qatar is set to receive thousands of foreign visitors when it hosts the 2022 football World Cup.

The country's embassy in Canberra and Qatar Airways have not yet responded to the BBC's requests for comment.

Google has announced that it will invest A$1bn ($740m, £550m) in Australia over the next five years.

It is the US technology giant's largest investment in the country to date.

Google says the money will be used to build a research hub, increase its cloud computing capacity and fund partnerships with local organisations.

The move - named the Digital Future Initiative - is expected to directly create 6,000 jobs and support 28,000 overall.

"Australia can help lead the world's next wave of innovation, harnessing technology to improve lives, create jobs, and make progress," Google boss Sundar Pichai said at the initiative's launch in Sydney.

Also attending the event, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed the plan: "The decision by Google has major benefits for Australian businesses as we engage with the economic recovery before us."

The investment will see the company partnering with local organisations, including Australia's science agency the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Joshua Kennedy-White of cyber investment company DivisionX Global called Google's announcement a "huge win" for Australian technology:

"It takes money to move an idea into innovation and the first money is the hardest to come by.

"If Google cut $250k cheques to promising start-ups, they could fund 4,000 new tech companies in Australia," he said.

Poland border crisis: Migrants tear-gassed trying to cross from Belarus

Polish forces have used tear gas and water cannon against migrants trying to cross into the country from Belarus.

Videos showed migrants throwing stones and other objects at the Polish forces guarding a fortified border crossing.

For weeks, thousands of migrants, mostly from the Middle East, have been gathering at the Belarus border in an attempt to reach the European Union.

Belarus has been accused of pushing migrants to the border to try to destabilise the EU, a charge it denies.

EU-Belarus relations have been severely strained since long-term leader Alexander Lukashenko declared victory in a discredited presidential election last year and tried to silence dissent by cracking down on mass protests and arresting political opponents.

The EU imposed sanctions on Belarus in the wake of the poll and, along with the US, will step them up following the border crisis.

There have been more than 5,000 attempts by migrants to cross the border into Poland from Belarus so far this month, compared to just 88 in the whole of last year, the Polish border agency says.

The migrants, including children, have been living in makeshift camps in freezing conditions just inside Belarus. In recent days, thousands have converged on a crossing at Kuznica, south of Grodno in north-west Belarus.

On Monday, many of those migrants burst through a fence and gathered at a crossing on the Belarusian side of the border. They were blocked by Polish troops and a tense stand-off ensued.

By Tuesday morning, Poland's defence ministry said its forces had responded to migrants attacking a border fence at Kuznica.

"The migrants attacked our soldiers and officers with stones and are trying to destroy the fence and get to Poland. Our services used tear gas to quell the migrants' aggression," the ministry tweeted.

Yeah. What a beacon of human rights. Really like the way they handle things.  Let's go set up there. Like google and a police state need to get together.

Try this one for size.

Refugees always wind up slamming into a border.

One country is so bad people are willing to die to save themselvesz or more usually their children.

The other doesn't want a mass of refugees in their land.

In this case belarus seems to not want to take any responsibility or do anything on their end.

So what if...Poland were to set up an embassy camp if you will...a large enough area to accomodate and house, and feed, and screen and process all these refugees..on the belarusian side of the border. Then Poland can process them all, and still appease everyone in Poland who doesn't want a mad hoarde of undocumented people spilling into their country.

And I bet if you literally lost part of your country temporarily when you create refugee hotspots the host countries would suddenly pay way more attention to helping people move out.

Man...instead of throwing tear gas throw water and blankets and paperwork. Throw some aspirin. Diapers. Baby food. Matches a shovel.  You know how different things would turn out if when things got tense we bombed on each other that way?

Be a great place for langar and a tv camera Ravi. Get permission to ride in, do Langar, ride out every day.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen lauded military cooperation with Washington on Thursday as she commissioned the first combat wing of F-16 fighters upgraded with US help to bolster the island's defences during rising tensions between Taipei and Beijing.

Frequent Chinese and US military exercises in the region have raised fears of conflict touched off by a crisis over democratically-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory.

Tsai told a ceremony at an air base in the southern Taiwanese city of Chiayi to unveil the first squadron of its most advanced F-16s, the F-16V, that the project showed the firm commitment of the Taiwan-US partnership.

"I believe that as long as we adhere to the values of democracy and freedom, there will be more like-minded countries standing on the same front with us," she said, speaking on the same stage as the top US diplomat in Taiwan, Sandra Oudkirk.

The United States has no official diplomatic ties with Taiwan but is the island's main international backer and arms supplier, to Beijing's fury.

The world is worried Putin is about to invade Ukraine. Here’s why

PUBLISHED WED, NOV 17 20216:35 AM ESTUPDATED WED, NOV 17 20216:18 PM EST
KEY POINTS
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin is being watched closely by experts and officials.
  • They fear that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine.
  • Tens of thousands of Russian troops have reportedly gathered at the border with Ukraine.
  • Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, a part of Ukraine, in 2014.

President Vladimir Putin is being watched closely by experts and officials who fear Russia might be planning a military escalation with its neighbor Ukraine.

Tens of thousands of Russian troops have reportedly gathered at the border with Ukraine, and experts fear Russia could be about to stage a repeat of its 2014 invasion and annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which prompted global outrage and sanctions on Moscow.

“We all should be very worried, to be honest, I do share this assessment,” Michal Baranowski, director and senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund’s Warsaw Office, told CNBC when asked if Russia could be about to embark upon military action against Ukraine, describing Russia’s highly tense relationship with Ukraine as being a conflict “under the threshold of war.”

Naomi Osaka said she was concerned over the whereabouts of fellow tennis player Peng Shuai, who has not been heard from since making allegations of sexual assault against a former Chinese vice premier.

Peng, one of China's biggest sport stars, said on social media earlier this month a former member of China's Politburo Standing Committee, Zhang Gaoli, coerced her into sex and they later had an on-off consensual relationship.

The global tennis community has grown alarmed as Peng has not been seen since the post and on Monday the governing body of men's tennis (ATP) backed the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) call for China to investigate the allegations.

"I was recently informed of a fellow tennis player that has gone missing shortly after revealing that she has been sexually abused," said four-time Grand Slam winner Osaka. "Censorship is never ok at any cost, I hope Peng Shuai and her family are safe and ok.

"I'm in shock of the current situation and I'm sending love and light her way. #whereispengshuai."

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
