Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

What is "NAAM"?

Gurbani.org in an article basically states that Naam is knowledge

While other sources state that Naam is just the name of god.

My question is simple: What is "NAAM"??

According to my belief, Naam is the word. The word of God as Christians call it.

Naam is also the name of God. Word can be translated to shabad to mean sound or name bringing us back to Naam.

This word or naam is so powerful that it can be seen as fire in the spiritual world. It has a great amount of energy and power in it. It can expel evil within its vicinity. It even repels the jamdhoot and dharam raaj such that a person with lots of simran will have Guru Ji arriving to take their soul to heaven with great celebrations.

We have no idea what saying Waheguru once can achieve. If only we knew that when we say Waheguru - fire comes out of our mouth.... would we stop saying it. powerful fire which can stop any evil dead in its tracks.

This comes from a really evil person who had approached a religious person in order to kill him. He entered the taxi with him. when the preacher saw him he uttered Naam... the word - the name of God. This person was expelled from that taxi and found himself lost in some woods.

God comes to the help of even animals as the incidences narrated in SGGS. An elephant, crocodile and deer remembered God in the time of need. God came to save them. Therefore Naam is the name of God.

Just like a child calls to their mum to save them when they are in danger, just like a mum calls to her child to come and do something for her - this is what Naam is.

Everything on the earth has Naam on it. Even demons - they however hate it. Even the trees, walls, stones, the earth itself is absorbed in the word of God. They repeat and remember the word of God. The word is the one which is giving the sun the ability to be the sun, the wind to be the wind, the earth to be the earth, people to be people if they jap it.

We all have naam is us but it is upto us whether we want to use it. If only we knew what it does we would not stop saying it.  However God has played a trick on us and hidden all this spiritual drama from our eyes. If we could see all this happening then we would never stop naam for one instance. This is the level of our Gurus. They saw everything that was going on. Our thoughts, our feelings, things being stuck to us in the spiritual world, our desires and our future too.

This is what enabled Guru Arjun Dev Ji to sit on the tati tavi and say tera kiya meetha laage. He could see what happens for real to people who disobey God.

Imagine the unseen to be able to make your seen haseen.

ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
The Word, the Bani is Guru, and Guru is the Bani. Within the Bani, the Ambrosial Nectar is contained.

If His humble servant believes, and acts according to the Words of the Guru's Bani, then the Guru, in person, emancipates him. ||5||

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

John 1:1

Naam was in the begining, Naam is in the present and Naam will be in the future. Naam is Akaal Purkh and Akaal Purkh is Naam.

Beautiful topic Thee Turbanator Jee.

First Patshahee,  regarding the title of your thread, tells us just in the beginning of the SGGS : Ik Oankar , Sat-Nam

This means, there is only one Lord creator who is Nam, and that Nam is Truth or Sat, in the sense, that it is changeless, and has been existing always so, and shall remain so, throughout the eternity, that is why Guru called that Nam, as Sach or Sat-Nam.

Everything else is temporary, undergo changes and finally some time or the other, it ceases to exist, and desintegrates into the 5 tatwas, from which all the mayavee creation is made up of.

The Bani says: Ekas bin, sabh dandh hae, sabh mithiya moh maya. Now, this Ekas, is nothing else, but Nam.

Further on, Sree Guru Amar Das, also tells us in His paviter Bani, in ANG 753:

ਨਾਮੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

Naamai Hee Thae Sabh Kishh Hoaa Bin Sathigur Naam N Jaapai ||

Everything comes from the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the True Guru, the Naam is not experienced.

What confuses most of us, is that, that primal Nam is literally taken by many as a name or word.

But if it was so, can ever a word written or read could create such wonderful  and  infinite creations in the different khands or brahmands?

Moreover, there where He exists, there is no one except He Himself. Thus what languge can be spoken? Or who is ever there to call Him? Which book, which words can contain Him, if He was a name word.

So Nam/Satnam, brother, is a creative power, a highest level of consciousness, which has limitless virtues, among them, the supreme one is : Love/Prem, along with other noble virtues, just as Gyan, Kirpa, Daya, Param Anand, which we call it bliss.

Other thing is, that we limited beings, call Him or name Him, after an attribute of His.

Let us take for example: Akal Purukh.  Here, Akal means, one who is beyond time or death, or also above/beyond  Kal, the negative power, known also as the judge or Dharam Rai. So you see, at our level, any name by which we call Him, is due to any of His attributes, and has a start in the parameter of time and space.

While that primal Naam to which Guru Sahiban refer, is not any word in any language, it is the nameless Primal Being, the Lord Himself, that Shabad, that Naam.

There are many more mentions on the glory of  Naam , throughout the Bani, from which I have just selected 2 of them, and reproduced them above.

But in the end,  as brother Singh 123456777, has beautifully stated above :

Naam is Akal Purukh, and Akal Purukh is Naam.

Sat Sree Akal.
