I don't think they even needed to recite Mool Mantar to become Sikh. There is no ritual to join Sikhi.

As per Sikh Rehat Maryada (which was even approved by Akal Takth funnily enough) states that a Sikh is someone who believes in:

  • One Immortal Being
  • Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh
  • The Guru Granth Sahib
  • The utterances and teachings of the ten Gurus
  • The baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion, is a Sikh.

Gurbani states that a True Sikh is:

ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.

If those 40 people follow these requirements then they are Sikh.

That definition is so broad you could apply to a whole myriad of people. That maryada really needs to be tweaked .

Some 40 people converted to Sikhi in the presence of Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat. The new converts came from 12 different countries. They recited the Mool Mantar (fundamental spell of Sikhi).

U can't Convert to something that isn't a religion.

The only religion is Truth. That's what the Gurus taught. No Hindu, No Muslim-Only One (Truth/ Sat).
