I don't agree with you view that there is no clannish mentality in Tarkhans. The Ramgarhia designation was invented in  order give a higher caste status to the Tarkhans. Tarkhans hold the same views as Jats with regard to inter caste marriage. The level of violence that a Tarkhan family could enact would be much less than a Jat family but if the Tarkhan family involved with Chamkila were influential then there would have a whole host of linkages and favours then could have drawn on both to assassinate Chamkila as well as any subsequent cover up.

There is no doubt that the Kharkoos had Chamkila in their cross hairs, 1988 was the start of the Samaj Sudhar movement when the Kharkoos attempted to reform society and get rid of the ills which the Indian state had made the norm in Punjabi society. Khalsa Panchayats had been set up to try court cases, the villages were warned to not involve the state and its functionaries in any disputes that were taking place in the villages. Families of husbands whose wives had been left  for many years and lived with their own families were warned to bring them back to live in their families. In that atmosphere Chamkila would certainly have been a target as his type of songs with their innuendo were seen as having bought immorality into society.

Given the gand singers like Gurdas Mann has bought in since the 90s, you can just imagine what gand Chamkila would have bought in had he been alive today.

I think only Babbar Khalsa ever did that, the rest of the Kharku groups were mainly fighting on secular rights, while Babbar Khalsa’s fight was more theocratic.

The Kharkoos should have taken this haramjada out as well.

Take your point, GM is a controversial figure now, but was not so much 20-30 years go. I don't think many Sikhs live or follow his way of living and beliefs. TV was not present in many houses in pinds until past 20-25 years.

I think his influence on Punjabi youth is mild  compared to some singers who have much more prominently projected image of hair cuts, alcohol (yes, am aware GM has done songs about alcohol), females skimpy clothing and wearing Sikh insignia without looking like a Sikh.

Also, I think 'Bollywood' popularity did a lot more damage, and maybe soap serials in more recent times, especially to Sikh females

GM's songs and videos generally (with a few exceptions) have been mild in comparison
