It has recently come to my notice that vanilla essence and/or vanilla extract (which is a widely used product in ice creams, chocolates, cookies, cereals, etc.) contains alcohol/ethanol. Vanilla extract is made with vanilla pods in a solution of ethanol and water. So, is it ok from Amritdharis to consume foods that contain vanilla essence?

sis your gut bacteria can produce ethanol , the amount of ethanol is negliable for influencing your sudh budh , similarly ethanol is used in medicines and foods to disinfect and preserve in minute amounts . when you cook with extract the small amount of ethanol will gas off . If you are still worried use vanilla bean paste instead or the pods. in a whole cake which about 500ml plus of batter you may use 5ml of extract of that perhaps less than 1 % is ethanol (else it would have to state alcohol content as percentage)  so the final solution is very very small ...

Sister, YOU, as a human, produce and contain alcohol. Are you going to shun yourself ?

Thank you for your reply jkvlondon. When I bake, I use vanilla pods. However, it's just that some store-bought foods I eat contain vanilla extract. From your post, I have received reassurance that I don't need to worry about the alcohol content since it's very small. 

I don't think I would want to use imitation vanilla extract. The original pure vanilla is better.

Don't use vanilla extract. Don't take anything with alcohol no matter how small even if it is for an apparent good cause.

If 'medicine' had a small amount of meat in it would you eat it? 

You are made of meat? What does that prove? That it's okay to eat meat? 

The logic some people have is ridiculous.

Please be strong and just give up the products with alcohol in. No controversy. Simple solution.

In your example the meat doesn't evaporate.

Using real vanilla is a great suggestion, but I think it's fair to say the alcohol is gone from extract once baked. 

There is logic to both sides in this case. 

Has me wanting some vanilla bean and vanilla powder though. Yum.
