Okay, I think I am going to ask my supervisor about Topics 1 and 2 proposed there. I dont think 3 is going to create a good reaction, similar to what BhForce was saying.  I just realized that these topics are more science based so my supervisor will reject them. I give up for now.

you trying to find a topic more towards the humanities side?

Also SadhSangat ji, since my supervisor won't let me do anything that is not personal or religious I must do it on Sikhi.

OK, strange, but whatever. Yet, even if it has to be personal, I don't see that it must necessarily be regarding Sikhism.

I mean, in addition to being a Sikh, you're also a Punjabi and an Indian (yes, I realize you're probably not a citizen of India).

So if a Hindu Indo-Canadian could do an essay on Indian culture, dance, literature, whatever, why can't you? Is India only for Hindus?

Just a few topics:

Indian classical dance

Indian classical music (Hindustani)

Indian classical music (Carnatic)

Gurmat sangeet

Gurmat sangeet vs Hindustani classical music

Indian classical music vs Western classical music (harmony, melody, etc.)

Indian classical plays (Kalidas) compare and contrast Shakespheare

Architectural motifs and patterns of the Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib), including relation to Sikh theology (parikarma, water, causeway, 4 doors, lower level of Darbar Sahib vs. Amritsar city, lotus motifs, inscriptions, engravings of Gurus and lower deities, etc.)

Punjabi architectural patterns

Punjabi embellishment/art/folk art (embroidery, Phulkari, gota, etc.)

Again, I would stay clear away from Sikh extremist-type topics. You're not in a position to argue those topics. If you become a professor of religion or sociology with tenure, then maybe you could do research in that field.

Guest Singh

It is me the op signed as guest here. I will ask about music and yes jkvlondon the topic has to be more humanitiy side  cuz thats what the supervisor specializes in. I am not sure if she would specialize in music, and she if doesnt then I need a different teacher that does. However I am basically stuck with her . How about comparing sikhism and christainity. My supervisor is catholic and a religion specialist too so I think this may work.

Ok sadhangat ji, I came up with 3 topics that might work with my supervisor

1.

Subject- Anthoropology
how and why have different perspectives of the twin towers attack changed since sep,11 2001.

2.

Subject - REligion/

- How do the views of the ultimate purpose of life vary between the religions of sikhism, christanity, islam , and hinduism

3.

Subject- religion

How is the path to salvation different in the religions of Sihki, Chrisitanity, Islam and Hinduism and to what extent does it influence the actions of its followers

So she would accept none of the non-controversial topics I suggested above?

She only wants you to do controversial topics which are likely to have you get points marked off by biased graders? How exasperating!

What different perspectives would those be? I thought there was only one mainstream perspective that the attack was horrible? Or are you referring to the perspective of Muslim jihadis who celebrated the attack?

There are some people on this board that don't think the Twin Towers went down due to a plane piloted by hijackers, rather that there were other sinister forces at work. That perspective, however, is highly deprecated in the mainstream. What sort of references would you hope to get for such a perspective from JSTOR?

Not to mention the fact that you mark yourself out as a conspiracy theorist.

Also, what does this topic have to do with you as a Sikh?

This just is crying out for a grader to label you Islamophobic. "actions of its followers" I can only imagine where that will lead to. As in the tenets of the Koran leading to the actions of jihadis.

Have you not heard of M-103, the Islamophobia resolution? While not criminal law, it does state the official policy of the government of Canada, which is anti-"Islamophobic". Meaning that you're setting yourself up for a world of hurt if you happen to get either a Muslim or a Muslim sympathizing grader.

Out of these 3, this is the least worst. You're still in the awkward position of bigging up your own religion while possibly denigrating others, but hopefully you should be able to come up with some sufficiently banal prose to make it non-controversial.

I would say that the suggestions I gave in the previous post would be better in that you're not comparing our religion to somebody else's, which automatically gets people defensive.

Heres an update: I know it has been a while , but I have a topic and I am almost done the introduction. It justs maps out what I am going to do for the essay.I know there are spelling errors and random incomplete sentences, I plan on fixing them. But what do you guys think?

To what extent does the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s definition of Sikh identity affect Sahjdhari, Patit and Amritdhari Sikhs?

Introduction

This paper examines the question: To what extent does the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s definition of Sikh identity affect Sahjdhari, Patit and Amritdhari Sikhs? This paper will focus on how the extent to which Sikhs are categorized based on their devotion to their religion affect their lives. The Sikhs examined in this paper reside in Punjab, India and they will help to answer the question. The question is significant as it reveals conflicts that arise from the interpretation of orthodox Sikhs as superiors to less religious Sikhs. This question also allows investigation into different definitions of Sikh identity besides the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s definition. This will provide insight as to why less religious Sikhs are treated as inferior to orthodox Sikhs by the SGPC. Sikhism was the chosen religion of focus as identity in the religion is unique and is valued significantly.

The sources of information the paper used are primarily journal publications, books and other online publications to address the research question. The paper will first discuss briefly what the SGPC is and the history and contents of the Sikh Gurdwara Act,1925 to provide the required background information in order to answer the research question. The Sikh Gurdwara Act will define Amritdhari, Sahjdhari, Patit Sikhs and a general Sikh. Then the paper will discuss how these groups of Sikhs except the Amritdhari Sikhs are mistreated by the SGPC and how this relates to the SGPC’s definition of Sikh identity. Afterwards, potential reasons for the unfair treatment between these Sikhs will be discussed and explained with quotes from the holy Sikh scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the Rahat Maryada.

that's a good topic. You can also use supreme court or Panjabi court rulings, when the badals had declared only keshadhari or amritdhari can vote in SGPC elections, the sehajdhari Sikhs took the badals to court. So you can use those court rulings, or newpaper articles about the court cases in ur paper as well. I think the courts mustve used SGPC to make their decision. I think the amritdharis won and sehajdharis lost, but im not sure.

but if you wanted some nonbiased or 'sikh friendly' sources for 1984, you should search up Cynthia mehmoud. she wrote a researched book on Khalistan. Also she mentions lots of other researchers who have researched 1984 who were unbiased.

Some Background Info which could be skipped-

Sangat Ji I am in grade 11 and in the IB programme in Ontario, Canada. It is basically a program meant to prepare one for university. An important part of finishing the IB program and getting the special diploma they give is writing this extended essay(EE). It is a 4,000  word essay, and is supposed to be professional like at unversity kind of level. They gave us access to many online databases that maybe some of you in university use like JSTOR, which we are supposed to find research on our topic to use to write it. You also need a supervisor who specializes in your topic or subject who can help you write a good essay. The big problem is, I cannot narrow down to a good topic. I found a conditional supervisor. Basically, they agreed to supervise my essay if I can find more research on a topic and make more personal to me as a Sikh. My current topic which I proposed to this conditional supervisor was basically: How does asian culture influence modern american television? (I kept the question here short and simple but the actual one is just more wordy and detailed). My supervisor is a religion and human sciences or social sciences kind of specialist. The Supervisor asked which tv shows I would look at. I said Avatar the Last Airbender, and the Simpsons as these shows have asian culture influence. However she asked me how does it relate to Sikhi, and how does it relate to me? It does not really, not from what I can think even now and now I am thinking of changing my topic to a more Sikhi or personal based one. I wanted to make a sikhi based one before, but I thought it would be awkard trying to explain to my supervisor and writing an essay on the whole struggle and events of 1984 as that is something sikhi based and personal that I could definitely talk about. However, the problem is that it is difficult to find sources on this. Also, I can't think of an essay question or point to prove or something to show by writing this essay which relates to the subjects the supervisor specialiszes in like religion or human science or social anthropolgy.

The problem and questoin

I was thinking of writing something about Sant Jarnail  singhJji Khalsa Bhindranwale and sikhs in that time. Something to throw in the face of the kind of people who say sant ji is a terrorist or that the movement was violent and was a terrorist movement with Kharku singhs, or Khalistanis speratists etc. and the list goes on. However, i don't how I would put this into some kind of question or something that could e investigated, along the subjects of human sciences religion anthropolgy or social sciences as stated above let alone how awkard it would be trying to explain to the catholic supervisor at my catholic school about the government of India and terrorism. Then I also have to find "reputable" research from these databases and the information and journals that come up when looking for this kind of information is usually written by the real extremists associated with Indian govt, as most of you know. If i go on jstor or academic one file and type operation bluestar these are the kinds of things that show up:

Short para from there-

HOLY WAR AGAINST INDIA It is one of the grimmer and more ironic developments of the late twentieth century: religion, which is on the whole a benign force in Western societies, often combines combustibly with nationalism to fuel political murder in the Third World. In India, for example, the teachings of a militant guru are used to justify the atrocities committed by Sikh terrorists in their campaign to dismember the nation and establish "Khalistan"

Continued Benti from here

I cannot find academic sources that this essay requires me to base my facts on like how the army trained to invade Darbar sahib before sant ji lived on the complex, or how out of the 6000 people who gathered during the week of the attack, only a handfew survived, despite the government claiming otherwise, and etc. and the list goes on as to so many evidences against the government which are somehow magically hidden on these "reputable" sources. I could write a b.s essay on asian culture influence in tv shows like avatar the last airbender to argue that success from tv shows can arise from different cultures and dont neccessarily have to be "white" culture. I was also considering writing an essay in my opinion that Sikhi is the greatest religion and comparing it to other religions and I think it would be easier to find  reputable evidence  for this. However, I am not sure whether my supervisor would approve of this topic as it is my opinon and is obviously biased as I am a sikh, but I dont think she would have a problem specializing in it as it all about religion. But again, how would I put in a question form or as a thesis, that sikhi is the greatest religion in a "professional manner" as this essay should have.

I am sorry, this a longer topic but i am completely lost with this and I am going to India soon and need to get this cleared with my supervisor before I do which is in about 2 weeks after all my final exams coming next week and final assignments from TOK which is basically a philoshophy class in IB. Thanks for your time and patience. Time spent writing this that could have been spent studying for exams: 1h45min

btw- I posted this on sikh awareness to try to get more response

better question is being honest and using that you dont know to word it and say 'how young people experience a past event?' or ' how does someone rediscover their heritage' and the talk about how you went about finding good sources of info, and wat diffulyties you face in sidiing with militants or not?

    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
    • Good way of putting it, bro. One of the ongoing themes of Gurbani is the fake saint. Whether it's fake babas in Punjab or English-speaking personalities in the West, it's an continuing problem of religion through the centuries (and it's not exclusive to us by any means, this applies to all human societies).
