what EXACTLY is the problem with it? it comes up so much in gurbani and so much in sikhi that we shouldn't idol worship but what is the reason? the general rubbish answer is god isn't in stone but bani says god is so what is the actual answer for this? nowadays just believing isn't enough because will catch us out so we need to be ready with these answers. let's not leave sarcastic comments and actually anseer this question. if god is in stones then why can't we idol worship?

There is only ONE to pray to. Akal Purakh. Idol worshipping is treating the ego or the object as if it is Akal Purakh's entirety.

The rock isn't going to help you. "All things in God and God in all things" absolutely. See the rock as having been made from Akal Purakh and in Akal Purakh, just don't confuse it with Akal Purakh. Same thing for goes for people.

When we Jaap Naam, and see this all as an illusion, Khel, and see it as all only in our mind, in our consciousness shared directly from Akal Purakh, and we see all this, the self, the everything as Akal Purakh, you do see Akal Purakh in the rock, because you are worshipping Akal Purakh. You don't get there by starting with a lie, worshipping a rock. You get there starting with the Truth. Ek Onkar Satnam.

what EXACTLY is wrong with idol worship?

Guest human jee,

Maybe from a worldly point of view, there is nothing wrong in it, for all religions have various different deities, gods, goddesses, devis, devtays, trinities, angels, their wives, their mothers, their children and their spouses, and an endless etc...... all of them are energies working on different planes with specific tasks in the perishable creation, under the Hukum of Real Emperor(Sachay Patshah) Wahiguru Akal Purukh. These energies, assume the forms, of which in some cases, they have their idols representing them. And these gods, induce the jeevas/souls to worship, these lifeless, inert and conscious-less idols....

This is just one trap out of many, through which the souls are deluded and kept prisoners in the perishable creation of pain and sorrow, devoid of any reality or Truth.

From a sikhee point of view, this is profound ignorance, our beloved Guru Sahiban or Bhagat Jan, out of mercy for mankind, gave us the parsad of Gurbani, which is nothing, but simple lessons of love and devotion, to the only one Truth or reality, call it God, Lord, or just as Satguru Nanak Dev Maharaj calls that reality right from the very beginning of Sree Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj : SAT NAM

He beautifully describes that Ultimate and Highest reality/Truth in the Mool Mantar .

Please do read it, you will be fascinated beyond words, and a wave of mysterious happiness will go across your being, for knowing the qualities and virtues, in such a simple language, yet, the indescribable greatness of the Highest Being, usually known by us as Wahiguru Akal Purukh.

Then too, in the teachings of our Gurus, we come to know that, the only way to realize and manifest that Truth is within us, through the kirpa, the blessings, of that one Lord, through the meditation with love and devotion, of His divine Name only.

The Bani says: Sabh meh Jot, Jot hae soee. Means, He is an infinite Ocean of Resplendent Light, thus He  is formless, genderless, timeless, beyond space, beyond births and deaths, and His Light is present within each and every being, as a ray of that His Light, in the form of souls/jeevas.

There is a wise saying: as you dwell so you become. So you see, by devoting ourselves to the inert and lifeless idols, we go deeper and deeper into the darkness of our already heavy burden of ignorance.

While if we devote ourselves to Him, as per Gurbani, we step our from our natural ignorant state of mind to the one of true wisdom, we slowly fill ourselves with His Jot, His Light,  and then by His grace, if we keep on lovingly meditating upon His holy Name, we merge and become one with Him, that is the greatness of Sikhee, the blessings of our Guru Sahiban,  out of their love and mercy on us lowly and sinful human beings.

For the purpose of giving our love and devotion, to Him only, Wahiguru Akal Purukh, the Bani beautifully summarizes spirituality and says: Jin Har japeeya, se Har hoeeya.

Which means, He whosoever meditates by repeating His holy Name, becomes one with Him.

So brother/sister guest human, forgive me, if for any reason, I have hurt your feelings,  by putting forth the True devotion for the True Lord Wahiguru only, above any worldly common outer worships, it is just because, irrespective of any class, caste, religion, gender, color, His Light is the same in quantity and brightness in all of us.

Stay blessed.

Sat Sree Akal.
