Countries where Sikhs/Sikhi/Sikhism is know

A question for those who know more than me. 

Outside of India (leaving this out as I  think mixed/disparate replies will be received) in which countries are Sikhs best known/highest awareness amongst the general population ?

Some of the top ones will include Pakistan, Canada, UK, maybe Kenya (and to lesser extent Tanzania and Uganda). Others I think will include Singapore and Malaysia.

After that, maybe Germany and France, and then some other European countries like Holland, Italy and Spain

Other countries of significance (population) - I think most Americans, Chinese and Russians do not know much.

I think areas which are multicultural in the UK everyone knows who Sikhs are but if i was to walk into some white area like some random country side or small town then i doubt anyone there will know what a Sikh is or looks like. 

I doubt people know what a Sikh is in random places like Bournemouth, Hampshire, Devon, Gloucestershire,Worcestershire  and all the rest   haha!  i would hate to live in those kind of places, country side, cottages, farms   sounds horrific an absolute nightmare. 

But obviously in multicultural places like the South east and west midlands people know what a Sikh is.  

Its healthy for Sikhs to live in areas where other Sikhs are visible lol

I understand what you say, but you are confusing some towns with counties.

in response to you and even my own question,  a lot of who knows Sikhs depends on education and wealth. 

Yes, where there are Sikhs in cities most people know them, but in affluent areas, e.g parts of some of the places you’ve mentioned I think most people will know Sikhs.

Maybe in the other places Sikhs are not visible but they are known.

Moving the thread back onto the topic, can anyone add to their observations from travelling/living different countries where Sikhs are or are not recognised?!

 

my cousins (male and a female) went together on holiday to Egypt a few years ago. Both wear dastar and people there were really respecting them but my cousins think the Egyptians thought they are Muslims

I have seen racism in areas like ilford and other east london areas.

 

Also my uncle got called a p word in birmingham where he lives on the street.

 

So thats why i hate the uk cos its a wasteland.

I hear the Sikh community is really growing out there? Got quite a few neighborhoods with 20-30% Sikh population.

Outside of India, it seems the best places for Sikhs to live in terms of knowledge of Sikhs by natives are UK and Canada

Can others who live in less common places for Sikhs describe their experiences?

There's a story I read that during the 2nd World War there were Indian soldiers stationed in Egypt, the Sikhs got treated better by the locals than the Indian/Pakistani muslims because the Egyptians thought they were muslims. The Indian muslims tried to explain to the locals that the Sikhs weren't muslims but the Egyptians didn't believe them and still treated the Sikhs better lol.

I remember going to Wales in the first year of secondary school, and I was stared at as if I'd stepped off a UFO that had arrived from Jupiter. As a kid it was very unsettling, but looking back it's quite funny. So, Wales is probably one where we're quite unknown, which I realise is the opposite of the OP's question.
