I was wondering in this age of kalyug if a gursikh or even a sikh should watch movies, tv shows, listen to Punjabi songs etc etc... if possible piyaareo back your claim up by gurbani or other evidence.

I think it is really dangerous for Sikhs to be in any sort of bubble from the society around them. We should at least generally know what the majority are filling their heads up with even if these things are not our cup of tea.

exactly exactly exactly I was thinking the same thing, when I got into an argument with a sighni the other day.

She said, not distractions, so she doesn't go clubbing, and then I said, don't u watch tv isn't that a distraction

then she said no, which was a lie,

and then I said do you drink coke or water, and she chose coke, and I said, that is a distraction too..

boom, anyways, irrelevant story, but good question, and my answer would be essentially it would be cool supercool if anyone avoided this. But screens, and images, and videos are good fun, and informative, and entertaining, in moderation.

end of the day, a dumb question, but a good question

Most tv dramas and series are full of sex and nudity, I try avoiding it actually. A few months back the guys at work told me to watch power on Netflix. I decided to watch and the 1st episode had sex and nudity. That filled my head with wrong thoughts and I ended up going to my room and doing the obvious HAHA !    But yeah I didn't watch any other episodes.

Try avoiding that stuff tbh

But documentaries are good to watch! It's good to know about history, nature, and what's happening in society. BBC I player does interesting mini documentaries about real life people and issues. I watched this series called sex drugs and murder on BBC I player. It's a documentary series about this red light district in Leeds. It's actually shocking and tragic what these poor women go through. Very eye opening.

David Attenborough is gonna have a new series called dynasties starting looks real good!

finding the balance is important as with anything in life..

if you're old and experienced enough to know how your social groups/society works,  seeing and hearing the same nonsense happening over and over again then imo you have a solid enough understanding/awareness to start detaching yourself from it and instead attach yourself more to anything connected with Sikhi..otherwise this nonsense will never leave your consciousness - it'll keep being replayed and reinforced, becoming stronger over time - the start of whitewashing and blackwashing.

There’s a sakhi of a man who became gursikh under the direction of Baba Harnam Singh. This man was mute, deaf and disabled. He was taught to do naam simran and seva. Within six months he was able to speak, listen and walk. He spent many years there and reached the spiritual stage where he could do naam japna in his sleep and hear the anhad shabad. He went to stay with family, and became engrossed in TV. He would watch nonstop and forget his naam simran. Very soon after he could no longer hear the anhad shabad nor do naam japna in his sleep.

TV can be used for education and information. It can be used to listen to paath and kirtan. It can also be used to spread misinformation and to take us away. Most of us will have been brought up with TV in our lives. It is an addiction that must be controlled. I now watch maybe an hour or two a week on average.

I prefer reading to watching telly. I haven't watched normal tv in a good few years (6+ at least). But I will seek out some stand up comedy and catch the odd series (or specific movie) on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I started watching The Walking Dead series recently, but only because I'm a big, long time fan of the original graphic novel by Kirkman and Adlard.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
