Going back to classical raga

I was at one of my favourite Gurudwaras recently for someone's Akhand Paath & the atmosphere as usual was divine. But the Granthis were as usual ill educated, out of 'SUR' when singing Shabads with filmi tunes  - one must have continued to speak of Macauliffe & how the Christian missionary 'saved Sikhi' for the good of Punjab. Looking around, most of the sangat were either not interested in what the Granthi was saying, nor anyone seemed to know who the hell is Macauliffe even.. Little did this Granthi know the extent of damage & poison that has been the main cause of Macauliffe's mistranslations, manipulations of the Shri Adi Granthji & seeds of anti-Hinduism sown into every Sikh's mind. The type of 'Parchaar' or speeches going on nowadays in most Gurudwaras are actually dragging Sikhi backwards & away from the Guru's original words & preaching. Is it any wonder that Sikhs are lost nowadays? Either we get the most radical brainwashed Khalistani Talibani Sikhs with turbans & beards only as their identity with no clue as to what the original Sanatan Sikhi was as per the Guru's word - or  - we get those who don't even care whether they are Sikhs or not. Their's is just to drink their cash away, eat all types of meat, go to the local Gurudwara for showing off to their Sikh neighbours only - but the true essence of Sikhi is truly withering away daily as seen in most Gurudwaras. The most annoying & disappointing thing about the way in which the Granthis sing Shabads & Kirtans nowadays is no way near to arousing any spirituality within the hearts of the listeners or devotees. Perhaps we ought to demand that these Granthis or Raagis to sing in the original Ragas in which the Shabads are meant to be sung in.

I'll finish the post with this fantastic video & hope you all enjoy listening to this Shabad Kirtan bani of Shri Guru Angad Devji in its traditional Raga Sri Raga Di Vaar

Guruji has prohibited us from singing Gurbani to filmy tunes

when sung without raag it becomes less enchanting. Before the British came many more string instruments were even used in kirtan

Agree that it is better and preferable that Gurbani be sung in the Raags it is written for. However, the point about "filmy tunes" is not strong, imo. The raags bani is written in were probably used in nautch dance parties of Mughal, Rajput and others, as well.

The reason for raag is because music opens the heart and raag is very strong and makes you feel a specific emotion and Guru Sahib wants you to get than emotion e.g. hope (raag Asa) and pair that with singing of Waheguru ji's praises.

It doesn't really matter if raag is used is not because it matters if you really mean what you say

It's sounds better than harmonium though

I would re-evaluate this statement. It very much does matter if Raag is used, else Guru Sahib wouldn't have written Gurbani in Raag.

I'm not against some other forms of Kirtan e.g. Dharna, but Raag should be implemented as the standard.

I could mean what I say but I could sing it in the wrong tune...does that make it acceptable? Imagine if someone was doing Mool Mantar Jaap to the tune of, lets say, Jingle Bells. Would you not object?

Yeah I didn't mean that

I meant like using the Harmonium since that can't really play raag like most raagis do now. Sorry didn't phrase it correctly. Obviously filmy tunes shouldn't be used to

Apologies.

Even still, by allowing the harmonium and making the exception on a large scale is technically going against Maryada. If the Raagis cannot play in Raag then that is their problem, not Sikhi's. They should endeavour to learn Raag.

Obviously they don't because being a Raagi is just a way to make a quick quid or two these days...God forbid it matter what they are saying and actually learn Raag lol.

Gurbar Akaal!

    • I reckon this alcohol problem go'es back to the times of the Islamic invasions. Punjab faced the worst of these invasions and i guess the men took to alcohol as an escape from reality. It would be interesting to know about alcohol consumption in Punjab during the invasions. Punjabi people have been a very depressed and defeated people for a very long time, constant fear and anxiety so it would be no surprise if they took to alcohol until it became a part of the "culture"  Punjabis on the other side of the border have very bad reputation with alcohol has well in their own country. Paki Punjabi man that used to live opposite our house was a heavy drinker and back in the 90s he drove his car right into the house and they ended up with a hole in their house, this behavior happens a lot among them back in their country. So it would interesting to see where this obsession came from.  Its so deeply rooted in people. makes you think if it will ever go away. Families really need to star putting their foot down because otherwise it will just spill into the next generation, i mean have people not had enough of it ?
    • reckon they should be handicapped time wise / weightwise  because they have a definite advantadge  over women . I agree with Germaine Greer and Posie on the issue of trans women they are not women  and this whole nonsense has been created to overwrite biological women's achievements and remove their safe spaces .
    • really do you need a diagram ?He's referring to suhaag raat , yeah ewwww TMI TMI
    • that's why Guru Sahiban told us in emphatic terms to stay away from it because they knew that's the enemy's of the panths way to destroy us permanently . Look at aborigines , Amer-indigenous tribes, Inuit and Cananadian Indigenous , Scottish, Irish and Punjabis what do they have in common ? they were displaced and done over by the English and have propensity to drink their troubles away , and who encouraged their habit ? the English . Look at the government now here in Uk , the first thing they've done is open the pubs  starting from 6am !! on the 4th July whilst announcing enforcement of further lockdown in different regions and draconian measures in shops and on the streets which interefere in freedom of movement for the vulnerable .
    • I worked in retail but like in the warehouse part and the ladies who worked on the shop floor had to let men dressed as women into the female changing rooms! One of my friends worked on the shopfloor and she saw a man with a beard wearing a dress and he wanted to try a dress on and she was so disturbed she rang the manager and asked the manager a man wants to try a dress on in the female changing room and the manager said you have to let him!  Even men with c0cks who identify as women are sent to female prisons and then they rape the women inmates in there.
