You guys are severely disconnected from news if you don't know who did this and should likely start sincerely trying to figure out politics in the UK, especially if you're in the UK and still don't know who did this.

 

We shouldn't be trying so hard to be patriotic in the west, but simply honor the Sikhs for being Sikhs. The extreme is to call every Sikh who served in WW1/WW2 as an evil blah blah of Empire which imo is bs. The same Faujis who served utilized their expertise to combat against a Muslim larger opponent when partition rolled around. Some things aren't black and white, but I do agree we shouldn't try hard to be patriotic, especially since the UK always back stabs Sikhs and yet kisses up to Mussulleh

Considering that draconian laws were put over the sikhs in the advent of British Raj concerning arms and martial arts to keep a hand in  and also get paid for it seems like a smart move .

Not all the sikh military 'class' in those days fought for the 'Allied' forces. Google away on Chandra Bose's INA and people like Mohan Singh's involvement. Plenty of Sikhs sided with the Japanese in their battles in Asia.

If you go to India, the 'indians' who fought for the British are kept quiet whereas the ones who alligned themselves with groups like the INA are celebrated to this day. Chandra Bose even has an airport named after him.

plenty of sikhs were murdered and humilated by the Japanese in POW camps, the Hindustanis love Bose even when he had dialogues with Hitler.

I agree. But using imagery like this doesn't constitute remembering them in any way that isn't propagandist and manipulative. You know we have a docile, easily influenced section of our community. These fudhoos need protection too (from their own stupidity). 

We'd be better off remembering these soldiers  by making earnest efforts to find their stories in all their complexities instead of blatant colonial era style imagery like this, that arguably celebrates and reinforces a hierarchy with our people distinctly under the anglo boot. 

Just looking at those times (even) superficially paints an infinitely more complex picture of poverty, desperation and a complete breakdown of the powerhouse indigenous Sikh economic and educational systems. This conflation between amritdhari men and colonial loyalty is deeply insidious, as is the reinforcement of caste that underpinned recruitment. 

What about all the accounts of people being press-ganged - essentially forced into military service through various pressures. Here's an example of a letter sent by someone at the time -

We have to move away from this colonial narrative to grow as a community, otherwise we'll never get rid of the chaaploose mentality too many apnay have.

good points made. some of these  Sikh soldiers families never heard back   from them , they sadly did not know if they were still alive or dead.
