Sikhism has many different beliefs, concepts and practices. But If we were to summarise the main and most important beliefs of Sikhism.

What would they be? I know that the belief in one God is probably the main one , but what would be the others? It seems that in modern society many people are so bothered about minute things. That they are forgetting the main and core beliefs of the faith.

1. Submission to god's will .

Perhaps the most important and obvious and one very easily overlooked. And this is where Sikhism is also closer to Islam . Because islam also means " to submit to allah's will".

"Hukam rajaai chalna nanak likhya naal" (You should walk in the will of god's will as its written for you, Says Nanak) .

Accepting hukam is not easy when you're attached to moh maya . But once you can accept, then the biggest of joys and biggest of tribulations can't shake you because ultimately you realize everything is happening in the divine will of creator  and nothing is outside his will.

2. Emphasis on Karma

"Karmi aapo aapni kae nede ke door" (Everyone is judged by their karma. Some due to their good karma feel closer to god, others feel away from god and peace because of their bad karma). This is where Sikhism is very close to Hindu and Buddhist thought . As Buddhism also emphasizes a lot on Karams.

"Dadde dos na deo karte . Dos karama aapneya . Jo main keeya , so main paaya, Dos na deeje awar jana " (The letter 'Dadda' : Don't blame creator for your bad condition , blame your own karmas . What you do , that you have obtained , don't blame anyone else for it)

3. Dharma is son of Karma

"Dhaul dharam Daya ka poot, Santokh thaap rakhya jin soot" (The Dharma bull is son of Daya the compassion . Its kept in place by contentment Santokh)

Meaning you can't call yourself dharmi until you are first dayavaan (charitable / compassionate). A person merciful to others, who takes sympathy with orphans, poors and downtrodden is dharmi manukh. On the contrary , wearing 5Ks or any dharmic libaas and you're not having Daya for others, its just show-off . Compassion begets Righteousness. As the history goes , when asking for five heads on Baisakhi, Daya Raam came first, then Dharam Ram.

4. You have no control over your own liberation although you can try to impress god for it with a dharmic lifestyle

"Karmi aave kapda, nadri mokh dwaar" (By past karma this body is obtained , by divine grace the door of liberation is found).

there's much more , but I guess i will stop here

The structure or base on which sikhee stands strong are :

1)Ik Oankar

Means, the only one Lord God, sabse oocha Bhagwant.

2) Satgur Prasad, means His grace, His mercy.

3) Jap the jap, or the bhakti of His Naam.

And

4) His mauj or Hukum

The whole creation, countless galaxies, universes, jeevas... all that is seen or unseen, are just His fabulous extraordinary unparalleld  expressions.

Waheguru.

Naam japo

Chant the naam of God and praise him

Kirat Karo

Work and honest living (no cheating, stealing etc.)

Vand ke chako

Share before consuming (food, money etc.)

And to help you do these 3 things you have Bani, Bana, Seva and Simran

So these are the core beliefs of the faith? Im sure there must be more to Sikhi. then get a decent job at tesco. share our pack lunch with colleagues and praise God?

- Spread the faith to non-believers (as you spread it you learn it too along the way)

- If you die fighting for the sake of defending innocents and Sikhi your soul will be liberated from cycles of birth and death.

- Control/avoid the 5 vices

-We dont believe in black magic or horoscopes or other superstituions

- Celebrate Gurpurbs

- To wash away your bad intentions and sins do regular daily meditation naam simran japs

- The Guru's were not God's or God but as gurbani says they are metaphoric boats to help your soul cross the wild stormy ocean of ups and downs of the world to the bliss and calmness of the other side (God).

- Give at least 10th of your income (daswhand) in charity but for exclusive Sikh causes only which help the sangat grow and prosper. So many foolish well meaning Sikhs give money to non-sikh causes and charities but at the determent of the Sikh community cos when someone else is getting that money, needy people in our kaum are not. Also if you are already paying taxes in your country then I would argue that 10% figure can decrease to a lower amount like 2% or 5% if your not financially able to do 10%.

I think one of the biggest things also is

Sikhs do not look down on non Sikhs. We do not force convert anyone. Spread lies. We are an honest faith. Where our belief is respect for everyone. Sarbat da bhala.

Also overcoming adversity. The core belief in not giving up our faith or beliefs.

Sikhs are told to stand up for anyone of any faith. To fight injustice wherever we see it . Help the  defenceless.  Fight dictators and tyrants.

Not harm anyone or anything. Live an honest life.

In terms of philosophy

The shabads tell us about what life is. It guides us on our moral values and lifestyle to lead.

The main essence of Sikhi is Naam. Without Naam this life is rendered useless. This is because we spend all day doing work etc, but how many times have we sat down and tried to Jap Naam? Without contemplating upon Bani and doing Naam simran we can only move a limited amount in terms of Sikhi.

Doing Seva is also equally important. Seva should be without the desire of recieving anything in return. In this way, our ego, and desire are controlled. Seva also brings us compassion which is another virtue of a True Gursikh.

Sikhi is about developing pyaar for Vaheguru, allowing our Love for Him to take over and expel our avgun. Vaheguru is the only One that exists not me. Sikhi is about keeping our faith strong in Guru Ji and accepting His Command as true. Sikhi is about being humble, we are mere puppets playing in the Blessed Hands of Vaheguru Ji, what power do we have?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
