Do minorities exaggerate their history?

That's for the minorities to decide if they want to go into the masses or not. People can identify themselves how they want to. Most people are attached to their heritage so its unlikely most people want to do that. People often chose their heritage to be their identity, so merging into the mass will be seen as a threat to their identity.
