After amritvela baniyan I like to just straight my back, close my eyes and just focus on my breathing. It’s no calming and peaceful. However if I don’t jap ‘vaheguru’ will it not count as meditation if so is it pointless to do it?

What you are doing is physically relaxing. That's good for your physical health, but it doesn't do you any spiritual good.

Gurbani says to remember God via the Word, not mere meditation (without the Shabad):

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment. p1425

The person who focuses his attention through the one Shabad who recognizes God preserves his Brahminism. p649

To this question of the OP, let us see  what Sree Guru Nanak Dev Maharaj  reply does HE give below:

ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੩॥

Naam Dhuraae Chalai So Chor ||3||

Those who do not let the Naam become manifest within themselves, depart like thieves in the end. ||3||

Path Khoee Bikh Anchal Paae ||

The mortal loses his honor, gathering sin and corruption.

Saach Naam Ratho Path Sio Ghar Jaae ||

But imbued with the Lord's Name, you shall go to your true home with honor.

In these 3 verses above  Guru Jee is telling us, that if we do not do Nam japna, we can never ever make it manifest within us, and if we do not make any attempt to make it manifest, we have done nothing, moreover when we leave this plane, we shall be treated like a thief  by the yamdoots, for we did not gahtehr the real wealth, yet we filled ourselves with useless karmas; so we shall definetely not go to Him.

For going back to Him and becoming one with Him, we have imbue with His name, we have to dye ourselves with His Name.

Guru  Sahibans instructions for returing back to Him, are / should be Hukum for us, without looking here or there with our manmat attitude.

Stay blessed.

Sat Sree Akal.

Gurbani is naam,

Vaho Vaho Bani Nirankar Hai

Bani Guru Guru Hai Bani Vich Bani Amrit Sare

Bani is still Naam and will help you to swim across but we should also do Simran as well.

What you are doing is not meditation but mindfulness. I learnt the difference from Ziva meditation founder Emily Fletcher. She went and studied in india. And she claims that there r 2 types of meditations. Those for monks and householders. For monks, its mindfulness, where u try to quiet ur mind and silence ur thoughts by focusing. Either on breath or other things. The underlying belief is that once ur mind is silent, bliss will come. But it takes time.

The second meditation, is where u dont try to quiet ur mind. The job of mind is to think like hearts is to pump. So instead u make the mind think of something. And use a primordial sound like mantar. And this is faster than mindfulness to get bliss and easier. This is the simran in sikhi. With the mantar waheguru.

U should check her out. She explains how mefitation is better than mindfulness.

Its sad tho that we others r learning from our heritage though we r not.

It's sad that you have been on this Sikh forum for 8 years and you were unable to learn what simran in sikhi is even after it has been explained multiple times.  You can lead a horse to the water but you can't force it to drink.

Ziva says it's okay to drink alcohol.   Gurbani says it's not okay.    Sikhi starts with Ik Onkar.   Ziva starts with maya.  Ziva is a really watered down version of the 3 gunas that Gurbani says is not meditation.

Mantra in Gurbani is about remembering Vaheguru and not about making sounds.  Animals make primordial sounds and they don't meditate.

Gurbani teaches actual meditation for free.  Ziva charges $400 to teach a person how to breath.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
