What is gurmat - if we want to find the essence of this great philosophy , we should understand the message that guru nanak set out to preach in his udasis.

He did not call for a certain look (hair ) or any rituals (like akhand path , chavar) , instead his message was simple - to merge with God we must develop the qualities of god i.e one must become nirbhao, nirvair, niralam (detached)

Vin gun keete bhagat na hoi.

Also he did not start a 'religion' and never advised anyone to convert from one organized religion to another. His message was universal and simple -to jogis, hindus, sidhs and Muslims - the gist of which was rather than focus on external symbols such as ashes on the body (as worn by yogis of the time ) or the clothe used by muslims for navaz called musala , one should train ones mind to embody the spirit of these symbols

ਮਿਹਰ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

Mihar Maseeth Sidhak Musalaa Hak Halaal Kuraan ||

Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.

ਸਰਮ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਰੋਜਾ ਹੋਹੁ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ॥

Saram Sunnath Seel Rojaa Hohu Musalamaan ||

Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਬਾ ਸਚੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਕਲਮਾ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

Karanee Kaabaa Sach Peer Kalamaa Karam Nivaaj ||

Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.

ਤਸਬੀ ਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਖੈ ਲਾਜ ॥੧॥

Thasabee Saa This Bhaavasee Naanak Rakhai Laaj ||1||

Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||

Sadly the way sikhis is practised today is very different from guruanank's mission , we emphasize empty recitation and external look rather than fighting with a mind which has enslaved us and causes nothing but suffering for ourselves and people around us .

You are forgetting Guru Gobind Singh maharaaj is Guru Nanak Jee therefore the Kes is important amongst other things.

Futher, Guru sahib did start this Panth with the agiaa for Vaaheguroo sahib Jee.

Guru sahib advised others how to be true to their Dharam and used metaphors for them as you have stated above.  Maybe don’t look at Sikhi through the lens of Abrahamic faiths?

Bro ,

When Bhai Mardana asked Guru ji how to become a sikh , first hukam was not to cut hair ... That same hukam was kept by All Guru Sahiban . Living in Hukam includes keeping roop with rom . Accepting reality and not self-deluding oneself is a big part of sikhi thought. Unfortunately, we have all become guilty of dropping the pearls and jewels of Guru ji's wisdom for the cut glass beads of worldly knowledge .

Do these other faiths even have any concept like dharam within their 'religion'?

Maybe our Gurus were trying to introduce things they lacked to them - through language/metaphor that they would be able to comprehend if they applied themselves to it - and had nadar?

That goes for Gurbani as a whole too - conveying things to us for our own good in metaphor/languages that human minds can maybe grasp - if they have grace and can make the effort?

I would argue that Guru Nanak Sahib Ji did start a new religion by setting his own spiritual path different from Islam and hinduism which were the 2 competing ideologies in indian subcontinent and central and south asia as a whole.

Guru nanak's message and teachings was universal and appealed to people of all faiths, he didn't stay in one place in punjab and preached. He went to multiple lands and nations to different nationalities, ethnicities and races speaking to people in a languages they understood about God and how to be better connect to Waheguru and live a better life than they were at the moment. He was the first missionary seeking converts to the new spiritual path as ordained by God. Had God wanted him to preach in one place to one group of people he would have stayed in kartarpur punjab and never moved.

It is the Sikhs of today that are forgetting or deliberately ignoring this very important aspect of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji's life. They do not want to implement the reaching out to non-sikhs and sikhs alike spreading Sikhi they rather get on with their own selfish lives doing bit of naam simran here and there and going gurdwara and thats their bit for Sikhi done. Forgetting that the problems that Sikhs and Sikhi faces in present times is that selfishness not looking out for each other or helping each other in progressing as Sikhs or trying to seek new converts. And who is waiting in the wings to pounce on your sons and daughters and brothers and sisters cos of your lack of action? Well its the abrahamics and the atheist propagandists.. so therefore we cant not complain when your daughter or sister gets groomed by isis muslim extremists when you were never teaching her to stand strong and have pride in Sikhi.

surely Sikhi is the META panth/path therefore above the others which have been sidelined/obscured by manmade interest groups?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
