I was brought up in a ghetto (Handsworth). It is a pretty ugly and rough area in Birmingham. Lots of kaale and pendu people.

Exactly. I think if he had said "the West Midlands is like the large area between 1980s Bucharest and 1970s Moscow but with a silly accent" it would have been a much more fitting comparison.
