I grew up in Canada and I have never really integrated into Punjabi culture until of late. Recently, I have been listening to more and more Punjabi music( Sidhu, Karan Aujla) and from there I have realized people still give importance to castes. My father's last name is Chawla and my mom's is Sodhi, but sometimes i still don't feel like a real Punjabi. When I look at my extended family, no-one has cut their hair but I have seen people say " Chawla is a hindu surname".  I don't get why being Jatt is such a big deal.. I think both of my parents are from Khatri roots and I think that is higher than being Jatt, yet everyone around me acts like being Jatt is a superpower. I even saw a post on twitter saying " today is a good day to be a Jatt" or girls saying they are looking for a Jatt man only. I don't know why but this makes me so confused as to think if people actually make assumptions based on my surname. Is being a Khatri looked down upon in punjabi community or does it make me less of a punjabi?

Not that I give a toss about these things, but I thought Sodhi was a Khatri got? My cuz's girl is one?

You will come across all types of people in life and if you come across a Jat who thinks he is superior then you will come across the same amount of other castes who will try and belittle Jats. There are stupid people everywhere. I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said  "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent"

If you are confident in yourself than no amount of idiocy about caste supremacy can have an effect on you. The greatest danger is when you start to fall into the same idiocy but claiming that your caste is higher than the caste of the person.

Yh it is   but a minority are jatts too   a bit like bedis.   Not sure how that happened    but then again jatt really isn't a caste  but are made up of various different tribes, clans etc

Baba vadbagh singh sodhi is my ancestor and my family go to his gurdwara dera sahib.  My ancestors originally came from anandpur sahib and settled in doaba.

Most sodhis are still in anandpur sahib area. But in my dads pind  we have a whole lane were sodhis live.

Yh   I know    that's where the sodhi name comes from    sodhis are descendants of the gurus    while bedis are descendants of guru nanak dev ji   and bhalla? Are descendants of guru amar das ji I think.

Guru Gobind Singh in bachittar natak narrates the history of the sodhis and bedis.  Raam had two sons  luv and kush  one of the sons had a son called sodhi   and that's how the sodhi lineage started, then there was the surya dynasty etc

My family are from the same line as baba vadbagh singh sodhi

What I meant was that iv never met a sodhi before other than my own family and extended family ...

I think it might be because a small number of weak minded people amongst the Sodhis  succumbed to the incessant nonsense from certain peasant quarters about being 'high caste' and joined them myself.
