Pre-partition Punjab map

interesting stuff    maps showing different religions just before partition. We are lucky we got what we got! most of majha and doba was muslim majority at the time! even in amritsar and tarn taran the sikh/hindu combined population was just about higher than the muslim population.  if it wasnt for amritsar and tarn taran having less muslims, perhaps the whole of majha and doaba would of gone to pakistan?  Amritsar/tarn taran were like a hindu/sikh enclave surrounded  by muslim majority areas. I think hadn't it been for amritsar half of present day east punjab would of been in pakistan. 

malwa on the other hand was the sikh strong hold with sikhs making majority of the population in most areas of malwa, with hindus making the biggest population in ludhiana, moga, mukhtsar etc   

judging by these maps a lot more muslims were left on the wrong side of the border than Sikhs/hindus were     

how did sikhi spread like that in malwa?  i know that Guru Gobind Singhji spent a lot of time there ...

Could some sikhs from these areas have Muslim ancestors? I ask this because I am always being mistaken for being a middle eastern by not only punjabis but middle easterners themselves. I am from doaba area maybe during partition one of my ancestors were Muslims ? Is this possible

Could be,  I'm from doaba too and always used to be mistaken for a muslim,  I got so fed up of it that it was one of the reasons why  I stopped cutting my hair lol        

It was worse because even punjabis used to think I was a muslim,  it actually depressed me!  

There must be some link ...

But imo  I think people from amritsar tend to look more like their neighbours from the other side of the border!

The narrative among most Sikhs (who like to only see themselves as victims) is that we were somehow deprived in 1947 of a Sikh majority country (or, at the very least, separated from lots of land in West Punjab that should have gone to India instead of Pakistan).

 

They always ignore the cold hard demographic truths. We were lucky to get as much of Punjab on the Indian side of the border as we did,

Punjab 1941

 

The Muslims might have been slight majorities in some of the East Punjab tehsils but they were minorities in the rural area which was were the bulk of the population lived. You are wrong that Ludhiana, Muktsar and Moga was Hindu majority areas. Moga tehsil was 64% Sikh. Ludhiana district especially the rural areas were heavily Sikh. The 1941 census was held at a time when the Congress party was boycotting the British war effort while the Unionists who were secular Muslims with Sikhs and Hindus were assisting the British war effort. The 1941 was thus greatly skewed towards the Muslims as the Muslims were the ones taking the census. The war also affected the Sikh population because the large number of Sikhs in the army who were serving abroad like East Africa, Singapore and North Africa. 

Apart from the fact Guru Gobind Singh spent many months in Malwa after the creation of the Khalsa there were other factors why Malwa became a predominately Sikh area. Banda Singh Bahadur's spent time in Malwa and during the Misl period the Sikhs after attacking the Mughals and Afghans used to use the Jangal Desh area of Malwa to rest and recuperate.   After the defeat of the Mughals and Afghans, the Malwa contained many small mini states which the British then swallowed up. The Singh Sabha movement was also very strong there in the turn of the century and the first few decades of the 20th century. Because of the Singh Sabha the Sikh Jats would not marry their daughters to Hindu Jats unless they because Sikhs. With the collapse of the Hindu Jat population the rural areas became majority Sikh with most of the Hindus now just restricted to trading castes.

Amritsar accent is different to Doaba and Ludhiana.

We are lucky to have Amritsar in India. But it had greater significance before partition. Now it just lies by the Wagha border. Lahore is the second city in Pakistan.

Malwa produced a lot of Sikh saints hence a Sikhi spread there. Two examples are Nanaksar and Bhindran Jatha (Damdami Taksal).

I've heard many dialects of Punjabi spoken in Punjab. The one spoken by mainly jat people does sound like it's a bit uneducated and harsh sounding. Almost like they struggle to put a coherent and clear sentence together and stutter while speaking. 

Pakistanis can speak okayish Punjabi. But they also don't speak the authentic version. I've heard certain people speak the real amritsari Punjabi and it's very nice to listen to. Many in Delhi speak good Punjabi.

Haha. Delhi panjabi is the worst. 

They add haagi in every sentence. And they speak like the comedic way sikhs in bollywood movies are shown to speak. And they cant pronounce bhabha and other letters correctly
