Man jailed for supplying illegal immigrants to Carillion site

The boss of a construction company that supplied labour to help build Carillion's Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick has been jailed for five years for employing illegal immigrants.

Jagraj Singh Mand, from Dudley Port, Tipton pleaded guilty to charges of knowingly employing 38 illegal workers as well as acquiring and possessing criminal property. He was sentenced yesterday (30th January) at Birmingham Crown Court.

In October 2016, Home Office Immigration Enforcement Criminal & Financial Investigation (CFI) officers visited the site after a tip-off. During the operation, immigration officers identified three Indian nationals working on site who were not entitled to work in the UK. All three were arrested.

Mand, aged 43, was arrested on suspicion of assisting unlawful immigration.

Investigators subsequently found that Mand had supplied 38 illegal workers, all Indian nationals, to the Carillion site between 24th April 2016 and 19th October 2016; three were arrested during the site visit and 35 others were identified through further checks. His business, Magnet Site Services, has since been dissolved. His other registered businesses, Taj Construction Services and Contract Construction, have also both been dissolved.

Magnet Site Services supplied the Midland Metropolitan Hospital development with concrete labourers and general manual workers. As he directly employed the workers, Mand was responsible for checking they had the right to work in the UK.

As well as the five-year prison sentence, the judge also ordered that Mand be disqualified from acting as a company director for four years.

After Mand’s arrest, his home was searched and two ledgers were recovered which showed that he was taking a commission from the gross pay of each worker. This income was not declared to HM Revenue & Customs. The most recent ledger, started in October 2016, contained only details of the workers who were legally present with a right to work, omitting those who were not. Officers believed this record had been started shortly before the visit from Immigration Enforcement, after Magnet Site Services received a letter from the construction site managers requesting assurance that right to work document checks had taken place on all workers.

CFI officer Andy Radcliffe said: “Mand was fully aware of the illegal immigration status of a considerable portion of his employees. Once he suspected that authorities were closing in, he went to some lengths to fabricate ledgers and cover up this illicit side of his operation.

“Employing illegal workers goes hand in hand with exploitation and the criminals in charge are making money off the backs of vulnerable individuals. That is why we are determined to clamp down on this type of offence and will not hesitate to act where there is evidence of criminality.”

No, I'm just saying that this type of stuff will be harder than ever to do in future in the UK. Also, the traditional work that faujis did when they came over here isn't really sustainable given the existing saturation of labour in that industry.

Look at the papers these days, it's filled up with determined attempts to stem immigration for low skilled labour that faujis traditionally do (that's what Brexit was all about). If that's the case, kutchay bundhay here are in for a hard time. I hope we don't see more homeless apnay like we did a few years ago, as a consequence.

Another thing I've noticed is freshies are now working for sullay in the domestic construction industry in droves. That wasn't the case before. Other communities are making a packet off apnay.

@dallysingh101I'm surprised that there are many Pakistani builders. I've not heard of them before. I live in the suburbs of SE London rather than in/near desi communities, but am aware and have seen many Eastern European and Punjabi builders around here, but never Pakistanis .

Are these UK born Pakistanis ?

Are you currently labouring ? Why don't you start your own business and ensure more of the 'freshies' don't have to work for others?

Builder jailed after Worker Crushed at Building Site

A builder from Southampton has been jailed after one of his workers was crushed to death at a building site.

Paramjit Singh, aged 48, of Southampton, was jailed for three years and three months after one of his workers was crushed to death at a building site.

Winchester Crown Court heard that the incident happened on July 16, 2019, in Chilworth, Hampshire.

Shauna Ritchie, prosecuting, said that Singh had been hired to demolish a garage on Ling Dale and clear the rubble.

At the time, Singh owned SAB builder and employed staff to work as “odd job men”.

The day before the incident, Singh had demolished all but one side of the garage. He returned the next day to complete the job.

Singh arrived at around 9 am, using a digger to remove the wall.

However, the wall collapsed on top of 64-year-old Kulwant Singh Athwal, who was standing on the other side.

It is understood that Singh did not know where his team were when he began working with the digger.

Ms Ritchie said: “The precise mechanism of the collapse of that wall is not known.

“What is known is that falling masonry struck Kulwant Singh Athwal and caused him the catastrophic crush injuries that caused his death.”

The court heard that the section of the wall that had fallen weighed 167kg.

Ms Ritchie said Singh did not fence off the area, put up warning signs or carry out a survey of the building prior to the demolition.

Following a trial, Singh was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence.

He also previously pleaded guilty to two offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

HSE inspector James Lucas said: “All demolition work, however large or small, has the potential of serious risk if it is not properly planned and controlled.

“Paramjit Singh failed to prepare a written plan for the demolition of the building or any site-specific risk assessments.

“In this case, simple control measures and safe working practices, such as excluding people on site from danger zones with physical barriers, could have saved a life.

There never used to be any in these ends. Now there are.

I'm working on that business thing.
