Rise Growth And Fall Of The Bhangi Misal

The Bhangis were Dhillon Sardars from the Amritsar region. The Bhangi misal was the most powerful and wealthiest Misal reaching its peak under Sardar Hari Singh Dhillon who ruled over most of central Punjab including the capital Lahore.

Their downfall was the alcohol and bhang addictions which resulted in early deaths among the leaders after Hari Singh, which gave Maharaja Ranjit Singh a opportunity to take over Lahore and other Bhangi territory. Had they been more "focused" perhaps they would of not lost their territory to the Sukerchakias.

A really fascinating period and misal in our history which is pretty much forgotten.

the famous ZamZama gun was captured by the Bhangis during battle with the Afghans and the gun came to be knows as the Bhangiyan da Taup. The gun was captured by Ranjit Singh after he defeated the Bhangis and i think it was later captured by the British after they defeated the Sikhs and is currently in Lahore.

Bhangis also built a fort outside Amritsar and was known as Bhangiyan da Qila. After Ranjit captured Amritsar from the Bhangis he further fortified the fort and named it Qila Gobindgarh.
