People love invoking Orwell's 1984 as the type of world we don't want to aspire to in real life, but in reality if the powers-that-be were to create a society purely based on physical and mental oppression, they're asking for rebellion and eventual overthrow. It may work for a while but not forever. I think Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (where society is fooled into believing it's free when in reality it's actually completely controlled at every level) is more sustainable because it doesn't draw attention to itself. I actually think we already exist in a milder form of this type of world in the West. I don't think most people care or even concern themselves with things that matter. We've been duped into craving worthless material things in order to head off any awkward questions or placate any pangs of conscience about our reality. While elements of 1984 are obvious in our own world (the illusion of political diversity; the emergence of political correctness; anticipating thought crime, rewriting history, etc), long-term control comes from providing people with the illusion of choice. If the people aren't aware they're oppressed (because Westerners equate oppression with overt jack-booted practices enacted in places like North Korea and Iran), then they won't look at their own existence and feel anything is awry. They'll actually feel quite smug about all that freedom, lol. But as Sant Jarnail Singh said, "I don't fear physical death; I fear the death of my conscience." How many people are even bothered about such things as long as they have the material trivialities at hand that dull the nagging voice in their heads? -
