The forests have been cleared for hundreds of years.

A sad reality of over farming. Knocking down trees to create yet more farms by money greedy land owners. Who want to deplete all the natural resources to fill their pockets and destroy nature and environment. Mostly people of a certain farming community then ..

I wouldn't say it's greed. It is all due to over population. Most farmers, especially in Doaba and Majha are small land owners who own only about 5 acres or less. Land holdings get smaller with every passing generation. You cannot make much of a living with 5 acres of land. During the 50s and 60s small land owners would sell their land and buy a hundred acres of land in UP especially in the trai region because land was so cheap there. Many of my own relatives moved there during that time as did many Sikhs from all over Punjab. But with so many Sikhs moving to UP the government started putting restrictions to prevent further migration.
