I think Jvala Singh should be careful posting these type of posts on twitter and academics should be reviewing the works of others and then putting their views across. Posting such pictures stating that two researchers of Indian miniature paintings both agree that this is likely a painting of the Guru could be viewed as at best naïve and self publicising or at worst mischief making.

Definitely. I've always thought the Mughals and the Sikhs (under Maharaja Ranjit Singh) should've been way more aware of this fact. Instead of wining and dining these Europeans under the guise of trading, etc., they should've sent their heads back to their home countries as a warning not to interfere in matters. That would've forced the Europeans' hand, and then when a hostile force would arrive by sea, the Easterners could've at least tried to destroy them before they set foot on Indian soil.

The Japanese did this and isolated themselves from the 16th to 19th century. They also killed Japanese Christians who had converted under the Jesuits priests. It was only in mid 19th century that the Western powers forced Japan to open up and trade with them and the Japanese protected themselves from colonialization by modernising their army and their industries.

What a star! Exactly what I had in mind when I made the post. Those Japs were something else.

they had the advantage of living on an island

the japanese were very fine people. Have u seen how dangerous katana is lol. But today their opulence is only a fraction of what once was, mostly due to the twin nuclear bombs US dropped on japan in WW2 , forever crushing their confidence from which I think the japanese have still not recovered. But Japanese had their own share of skeletons in closet, for instance massacre of chinese in Nanjing around 1937.

True, but I think had the British arrived in Delhi and Punjab's frontier a few decades later than they actually did then it would have given him time to consolidate control over all of Punjab. When the British arrived he was only a minor King and his prestige came from ruling both Lahore and Amritsar. Had the British first come into contact with him in the early 1830s he would have taken control of the Sikh states in Malwa and this would have brought over 90% of the total Sikh population under his control as well as given Sikh state strategic depth in any future war with the British. The Sikh armies would have been closer to Delhi then the British would have been to Lahore. In that situation he could have kept the British at arms length and had relations with rival powers such as the Russians and French.

Yet any European arrivals into India would've still come by sea, therefore their attack would not be a secret, meaning preparations could be made on the Indian coastline to head off any sea-faring armada.

they initially came off as submissive traders, whose only role was to make business. Hence Mughals had no issue with them. The merchant class was accompanied by christian figures , some of whom even tried to convert jahangir to christianity . One had apparently written something contemporary about the shaheedi of Guru Arjan dev ji.  So it all started with white merchants, hence it was "East India company" who first officially ruled over india

EDIT -- it were hindu dogras and britishers who colluded to overthrow our hard gained sikh empire . Gulab Singh dogra was given jammu kashmir kingdom by britishers for selling off Ranjit singh's raaj . Gulab singh dogra had looted sikh raaj treasure from lahore and brought it to his jammu kashmir. Ranjit Singh was the one who trusted gulab singh dogra who was his general and perhaps gulab singh dogar also helped expand the frontiers of sikh raaj. So ranjit singh gave him autonomy even. I wouldn't be surprised if it was at behest of such men as dogra that Ranjit singh gave huge gold donations to hindu temples. Today if you ask for autonomy in india, they give you bullets.
