Thank you so much Veer ji for answering my questions all the tips on stuff like folding gear etc. I'm going in as a 35P (linguist). I'm prepared for the racism...as much as I can be... but I know I'll be entering a whole different world of stupidity/ignorance (I have friends in the military, they're not sikh but they tell me about all the racism and other generic bs that goes on). I don't drink much water so I'll definitely start doing that more. Thanks for being honest. I need more of that bro and am open to all other advice. I appreciate you.

Buy the Camo cloth to use as a dastaar.

about the rest, if you have more questions DM Mangal_Kaur_basics_of_sikhi on instagram. She is a parcharik in the USA and knows ppl in the army she can hook you up with. Im not sure how her instagram name is exactly spelled tho.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

I am leaving for the U.S Army in the next month (basic training for 10 weeks at a fort where I will be cut off from the rest of the world). So I wanted some tips on how to keep practicing Sikhi in an environment that is not so conducive to it. I'm having paperwork done to get the religious accommodation to keep my kes, dari and wear a dastaar. So that exception will be made (which is my biggest relief) but I have so many other questions! I would really appreciate the help from anyone but especially those who have been through the military or army basic training specifically.

-How do you care for long hair when you have minimal time/products?

-How do you wear a kachera when doing athletic activities all day long and wearing thick pants over? Did you wear one? I really want to but I also want to be practical. Are there special types of kachere sold? Like athletic ones?

-Does anyone know of someone who has personally been through basic training and done the gas mask test with their beard? Was the mask seal adequate enough or did it leak air?

-On Sundays everyone is allowed to attend a religious service, they have many available but have to make special accommodations if they don't have what someone needs. (They don't have Sikh services so they'll have to make one somehow) How does that work for Sikhs? Do have some granthi or parcharak come? Would they let you go off-base to Gurdwara? If they can't accommodate me then I'm thinking of just attending the Contemporary Christian services so I can sing God's praises there because I heard out of all the options, they sign the most.

-How is the vegetarian food? I know MREs come in veg option.  How was the overall experience?

-Kirpan? Did you wear/bring one? Gatra? If they don't allow it then could I just ask them to issue me one of their approved military tac knives?

-Dastaar? What kind of cloth, is it the typical kapra? Do they issue you one or expect you to buy one separtely that matches the camo pattern of the uniform?

-Gurbani? You can't bring any books or text with you except for a religious or holy book, so I recently bought a Gutka that I want to bring. Will I even have time to read it? I bought a big one with like 10+ Banis, should I just bring a smaller 5 Bani Nitnem instead? This is my first Gutka ever since I normally just use phone apps, but we will get our phones taken away the first day, so a Gutka was necessary to buy for me. How should I treat it? I keep it wrapped in cloth when I'm not reading it, I know it's not exactly our Guru Granth Sahib but I still want to respect it correctly. What are the rules on how we treat Gutkas? How do you do this while traveling or away from home?

Any other tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Are you  a Khalsa Singh? Why are you joining the army? Why not educate yourself and achieve something better in your life so you can contribute to the Sikh  kohm?Have you not learned your lesson from those that are in the Bhartiya army? Whichever army you are joking, are your orders going to come from the Father of the Khalsa to go and attack your own Sikh brethren and sistren or the holiest shrine or shrines of the Sikh kohm? Even if you joined the desi army, you will not be defending your country because look how they are mistreating Sikhs and the Sikh farmers in India? Grow up and learn from the past.

I just found out I'll be leaving in two weeks to Fort Sill Oklahoma

So I asked about Fort Sill Veer Ji. Two things about Fort Sill:

They train artillery there so you may want to bring some ear plugs for sleeping.

Also, and more importantly, It's cold enough there in the winter people lose toes to frostbite. I'd bring sage green wool socks,  and buy more warm stuff that's uniform from the post on base. If you have any discoloration or the remotest signs of any frostbite you need to tell your mti drill instructor asap or you risk losing a lot of time on med hold if not an actual digit.

Army dress and appearance standards are slightly different than Air Force, but I'm willing to bet slim black wool gloves, sage green or black wool watch cap and sage colored thermals are permitted.

Stay in Naam, stay Chardikala and stay hydrated bro. Don't speak a word at chow just eat. Nothing to be afraid of, don't let them in your head with all the empty threats to wash you out or back.

Remember wear boots now for hours and miles a day to let your ligaments and muscles adjust.

You belong to Guru Ji and Dharam Yudh friend, train, learn, profit and be... comrades ..with your fellow soldiers but do not fully assimilate.

Most of what they're about to tell you is a lie. The us military is racist no matter how much you hear its inclusive and theres an equal opportunity office blah blah... it's run by racists bro..the military also has problems with rape, sexual harassment and drinking. Eyes wide open Ji. This is kalyug. You're going to do great just remember your real heritage. The army is renting you.

You're more than capable handling anything that military training entails. When you're done you'll wish it had been harder.

Ps.  It's really easy to lock your body uptight when you're standing at attention. Keep knees bent just a bit or you can pass out unnecessarily. To take it a level deeper...feel the tension in your belly....say yes to it...and release it...feel the tension in your chest...can you feel it? Say yes to that tension and open it up to Vaheguru...see how when you release..when you open your body gets straighter? So posture...straightness ...can be achieved by tightening the back and front or it can be done by releasing the back and front and while they look identical they are worlds apart. Any tension or pain you feel, say Vaheguru and release it...give it...give yourself to Vaheguru.

Oh, and my bad bro, you're wearing dastar so no need for wool watch caps but maybe have a fall and winter appropriate cloth selected. If they make you wear army acu camo dastar it will reduce your fabric selection...maybe a wool pagh underneath?

Thanks for all the tips Veer Ji. I'm supposed to be getting my camo dastaar in the mail this Monday, so I can have it before I got to basic next Monday. The wool keski underneath is a good idea. I'll get one. I'll also get some boots and warm socks. I've gone hiking barefoot in the snow before, so I have a general idea of my body's limits. Definitely don't want to get frostbitten, thanks for the tip on the socks bro, I'll do that.

And I get what you mean when you say racist white people who drink and do nothing but dumb stuff. I was the president of a frat in college so nothing new to me lol just graduated five months ago. I just received Amrit last week so a lot is changing for me...but at the same time things are still the same. I love your advice about not fully assimilating and that they are "renting me". Beautiful words and that's definitely the plan bro, Maharaj Kirpa.

People at MEPS had an issue with me bringing a kirpan into the building. I was almost sent home unable to enlist. They tried to bribe me saying I could sign my contract if I took it off and they'd give it back to me at the end of the day. I almost did but I had faith that Guru Ji would get me out of this pickle. Ended up calling a Captain to explain to the MEPS people over to let me continue processing and then later talked to a lawyer and got extra paperwork done so I can wear all my kakkars and hopefully wont have any more big issues.

I'm ready to serve my country and to do my small part in paving the way for future Sikhs. Things are gunna be a lot different with Covid, so I could use all the advice I can get. Thanks Veeri.

Yes, I have received Amrit and am a Khalsa Singh. I am joining the US Army because it is God's will. I have educated myself and have a college degree in foreign languages. I'm entering the military with a specialist job in linguistics that pays very well. I'm contributing to the kohm by being active in my nation's working society and representing the Guru's roop to hopefully help familiarize more people what a Sikh looks like and how hard we work. And my orders have always been from the Father of the Khalsa, no one else. My life is proof. Otherwise, I wouldn't have switched my religion from Catholicism to Sikhi, grown out my beard, worn a dastaar, embarrassed and confused my parents (who are Mexican and don't know what Sikhi is) and practiced this faith for the past three years to receive Amrit unless my life was completely devoted to my Guru. I follow His plans, not my own. I never planned on being Sikh, but here I am, in love with my Guru. Most of the time I don't understand His plans either, but I always know they turn out for the better. Let's both not doubt the goals and intentions of Maharaj. We know so little. I am still growing and I am still learning.

Oh, you sound so shocking when you say you ‘embarrassed’ your parents when you became a Sikh! Why were they embarrassed? It should have been you feeling embarrassed by them for remaining catholics and not converting to sikhism, don’t you think?  They should have felt totally and thoroughly embarrassed for following an abrahamac religion that has done so much damage to the world through colonising and never ending wars!  YOU OUGHT BE FEEL DEAD EMBARRASSED OF THEM and their pathetic religion and NOT the other way round!  I don’t know what has prompted you to take this action BUT I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT IT IS NOT THE FATHER IF KHALSA that has told you to act this way.

You claim to be a Mexican, which I DO NOT BELIEVE one little bit. You claim to be a degree holder in Linguistics, then why don’t you educate and help your kohm and it’s poverty stricken nation to improve itself and become powerful and wealthy,  instead of crossing borders against which there is an ongoing and long term plan to build a wall in the effort to stop people of your kohm entering its neighbouring country as illegal immigrants?

Why don’t you spread Sikhi in Mexico and convert the whole Mexican kohm into Sikhi, rather than following what they follow? Convert them all to Sikhi.

You are a convert Mexican and have no idea whatsoever about Principles of Sikhi or Khalsa. You just like the ‘look’ like many other converts or fakes do, whether they are Mexicans, Bulgarians, Egyptians , Serbians or Punjabis! You just like the look because it makes you look different from the rest of the rabbles! You are only doing this khalsa Singh thing to get noticed and attention  and nothing else. The entire world is aware of the treatment Mexicans receive in that place!  Help your kohm to become Sikhs and strong, financially and spiritually. Teach them about Dikhs, about Khalsa and it’s Founder. Stop wasting your time by joining something which is well documented in M.Moore’d Fahrenheit .....

If you had ever read about the real Sikh kohm and its never ending pain for what was done to its holiest shrine not so long ago you would have thought twice!  Would you believe that they appointed a Sikh man to execute their orders! Now, don’t tell us that his orders come from the Patshah! What about the aftermath that followed?

Study and learn about the real Sikh kohm and their unstoppable devotion and dedication to the Sikh causes. Be like them by emulating their honourable qualities and enormous love for their Guru and how they shed tears and feel sad each time they hear about the brave battles their Guru fought and won, and the martyrdoms of His Beautiful young sons and His Blessed Mother at the hands of those that followed Abrahamac religion!

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
