When you have a baby you go gurdwara to get hukkam of which letter to name the baby with.

Isn't the whole point of having guru sahib choose a letter for you so that you also pick a name in line with gurbani?

What's the point of going gurdwara and getting the letter C and then picking a name like Ciara! Doesn't that just defeat the whole purpose!  What's Ciara got to do with Sikhi or what your guru taught you?

‘Ciaras’ parents most likely weren't brought up in proper Sikhi, more Punjabi culture.

There are actually not as many people taking a letter to name their child any more- this is mostly because new parents now haven’t ever been educated with a reason as to why to do that.

Well you know maybe the parents of these children had a hard time at school and want to spare their children from that.

I went to a church of England High school there was like three Asians per year thats it  you know how much crap I had to take. I'm not condoning having English names  but I can understand why.

Well one needs the moral values and strength which comes from the knowledge of Sikhi which can help one to take no crap from no one.

In today's times when there is much more awareness of human rights those parents have no excuse to teach their children the Basics of Sikhi and giving them Sikh names and teach them their mother tongue.

But as they suffer from inferiority complex they just don't want their children to know about their rich heritage and history and just want to grow up as sheep.

This will and is already have a very detrimental effect on our younger generation who are neither here nor there with their identity.

Sure sure, imagine you are female child with a name like Sukhdeep, it might be fine in schools you have been full of apnia,  doesn't work in a school full of whites and blacks.

What's wrong with that name. We have given Sikh names to our children and in some schools they went they were the only Sikhs in the whole school. If any child dared to bully them we were in the Principal's office making sure that the issue was dealt with immediately.

Their Sikh identity and names did not stop them to excel at school and also become Student leaders.

Like I said it totally depends upon the parents to lead by example and show them what Sikhi means in daily life.

I think its a beautiful name, however I know first hand how whites and blacks feel about it.

Hindus and Muslims don't seem to give their kids English names.

Whats in a name? Think a lot of people are making a mountain out of mole hill, you could have a kid with a good old name who is not into Sikhi, then you could have a Paul who is into Sikhi. So what's in a name?

you are right if we think or do something according to spirituality then names or living style does not matter much and we can give many justifications like you just gave above on this topic.

this topic is not about measuring our inner spirituality, I think. they are talking about not leaving our Punjabi or historical name behind and follow easy path just to make it easier for others to pronounce.

according to me, spirituality teach us to be good to each other and have a freedom of choose our names and lifestyle and still be proud of what you are instead of being something you are not.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
