Apparently, it's the next big thing. What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a concept being talked about as the next big thing by tech companies, marketers, and analysts.

It's attracting attention - and money - from some of of tech's biggest names, such as Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Epic Games' Tim Sweeney.

What is the metaverse?

To the outsider, it may look like a souped-up version of Virtual Reality (VR) - but some people think the metaverse could be the future of the internet.

In fact, the belief is that it could be to VR what the modern smartphone is to the first clunky mobile phones of the 1980s.

Instead of being on a computer, in the metaverse you might use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments.

Unlike current VR, which is mostly used for gaming, this virtual world could be used for practically anything - work, play, concerts, cinema trips - or just hanging out.

Most people envision that you would have a 3D avatar - a representation of yourself - as you use it.

But because it's still just an idea, there's no single agreed definition of the metaverse.

Why is it suddenly a big thing?

Hype about digital worlds and augmented reality pops up every few years, but usually dies away.

However, there is a huge amount of excitement about the metaverse among wealthy investors and big tech firms, and no-one wants to be left behind if it turns out to be the future of the internet.

There's also a feeling that for the first time, the technology is nearly there, with advancements in VR gaming and connectivity coming close to what might be needed.

Why is Facebook involved?

It's invested heavily in virtual reality through its Oculus headsets, making them cheaper than rivals - perhaps even at a loss, according to some analysts.

It's also building VR apps for social hangouts and for the workplace, including ones that interact with the real world.

Despite its history of buying up rivals, Facebook claims the metaverse "won't be built overnight by a single company" and has promised to collaborate.

It has recently invested $50m (£36.3m) in funding non-profit groups to help "build the metaverse responsibly".

But it thinks the true metaverse idea will take another 10 to 15 years.

Who else is interested in the metaverse?

Mr Sweeney, the head of Epic Games (which makes Fortnite), has long spoken about his metaverse aspirations.

Online multiplayer games have had shared interactive worlds going back decades. They are not the metaverse, but have some ideas in common.

In recent years Fortnite expanded its product, hosting concerts, brand events, and more inside its own digital world. That impressed many with what was possible - and thrust Mr Sweeney's vision of the metaverse into the spotlight.

Other games are getting closer to a metaverse idea, too. Roblox, for example, is a platform for thousands of individual games connected to the larger ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Unity, a 3D development platform, is investing in "digital twins" - digital copies of the real world - and the graphics company Nvidia is building its "Omniverse", which it describes as a platform for connecting 3D virtual worlds.

So is it all about games?

No. Even though there are so many ideas about what the metaverse might be, most visions see social human interaction as the core.

Facebook, for example, has been experimenting with a VR meetings app called Workplace, and a social space called Horizons, both of which use their virtual avatar systems.

Image caption,Facebook workplace imagines VR meetings in which people can still use their real-world computers at the same time

Another VR app, VRChat, is entirely focused around hanging out online and chatting - with no goal or purpose other than exploring environments and meeting people.

Other applications may be waiting out there, ready to be discovered.

Mr Sweeney recently told the Washington Post that he envisions a world where a car manufacturer trying to advertise a new model is "going to drop their car into the world in real time and you'll be able to drive it around".

Perhaps when you go online shopping, you'll try on digital clothes first, and then order them to arrive in the real world.

Does the technology exist yet?

VR has come a long way in recent years, with high-end headsets which can trick the human eye into seeing in 3D as the player moves around a virtual world. It has become more mainstream, too - the Oculus Quest 2 VR gaming headset was a popular Christmas gift in 2020.

The explosion of interest in NFTs, which may provide a way to reliably track ownership of digital goods, could point to how a virtual economy would work.

And more advanced digital worlds will need better, more consistent, and more mobile connectivity - something that might be solved with the rollout of 5G.

For now, though, everything is in the early stages. The evolution of the metaverse - if it happens at all - will be fought among tech giants for the next decade, or maybe even longer.

Texas nurse guilty of killing patients by injecting them with air

A Texas nurse has been found guilty of the murder of four patients who died after he injected them with air following heart surgeries.

William Davis, 37, was convicted of capital murder by a jury on Tuesday and could now face the death penalty.

Prosecutors said he targeted seven people from June 2017 to January 2018.

Christus Mother Frances Hospital, where the attacks took place, said it hoped that the "jury's verdict helps bring some closure to those harmed".

The men, aged between 47 and 74, experienced "seizure-like symptoms" and died from fatal brain damage after the air was injected into their arterial lines.

The court heard that the four men killed by Mr Davis had initially been recovering well from their operations and that doctors had been at a loss as to how their conditions had deteriorated so rapidly.

Authorities said it was only once doctors saw CT scans that showed air in the patients' brains that they realised something was amiss.

Dr William Yarbrough, a Dallas based pulmonologist, told the jury that he had never observed such a case in his decades in medicine.

During the trial, security footage was played of Davis entering the room of one of the patients, whose heart monitor alarm sounded just three minutes later. He later died from the injection.

Davis' lawyer, Philip Hayes, claimed during the trial that there was no evidence that the men had died from foul play and suggested that Davis was being made a scapegoat for a hospital with serious procedural issues.

Speaking during the trial, Jacob Putman, the district attorney for Smith County in Texas, said that "it turns out a hospital is the perfect place for a serial killer to hide".

Prosecutors will now seek the death penalty for Davis, who they claim "enjoyed" carrying out the murders and "liked to kill people".

Davis will remain in custody at the Smith County Jail on an $8.75 million bail bond.

German ISIS bride who chained up five-year-old Yazidi slave girl in the sun and let her die of thirst as punishment for wetting the bed is jailed ten years for 'war crime'

  • Jennifer Wenisch, 30, converted to Islam in 2013 and went to Iraq to join ISIS
  • She was found guilty of allowing a slave girl to die of thirst in the scorching sun
  • The court said Wenisch, from Lohne, had committed 'crimes against humanity'
  • Her husband is also on trial and will be sentenced in November

A German ISIS bride was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Munich court today over the war crime of letting a five-year-old Yazidi 'slave' girl die of thirst in the sun.

Jennifer Wenisch, 30, from Lohne in Lower Saxony, was found guilty of 'two crimes against humanity in the form of enslavement', as well as aiding and abetting the girl's killing and being a member of a terrorist organisation.

Wenisch converted to Islam in 2013 and made her way to Iraq to join the Islamic State, where she and her husband 'purchased' a Yazidi woman and child as household slaves according to the court.

'After the girl fell ill and wet her mattress, the husband of the accused chained her up outside as punishment and let the child die an agonising death of thirst in the scorching heat,' prosecutors said during the trial.

'The accused allowed her husband to do so and did nothing to save the girl.'

Her sentence, handed out by the Higher Regional Court in Munich, is the culmination of what is thought to be one of the first convictions anywhere in the world related to the Islamic State group's persecution of the Yazidi community.

Presiding judge Reinhold Baier handed down the verdict to Wenisch this morning, after declaring the child was 'defenceless and helplessly exposed to the situation,' and that Wenisch 'had to reckon from the beginning that the child, who was tied up in the heat of the sun, was in danger of dying'.

Wenisch's husband, Taha al-Jumailly, is also facing trial in separate proceedings in Frankfurt, where the verdict is due in late November.

When asked during the trial about her failure to save the girl, Wenisch said she was 'afraid' that her husband would 'push her or lock her up'.

Identified only by her first name Nora, the Yazidi girl's mother has repeatedly testified in both Munich and Frankfurt about the torment allegedly visited on her child.

The defence had claimed the mother's testimony is untrustworthy and said there was no proof that the girl, who was taken to hospital after the incident, actually died.

Wenisch's lawyers had called for her to receive just a two-year suspended sentence for supporting a terrorist organisation.

Wenisch herself claimed she was being 'made an example of for everything that has happened under ISIS' at the close of the trial, according to the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, and appeared to show remorse for the crimes for which she was found guilty.

Wenisch converted to Islam in 2013 and is thought to have left Germany to join ISIS the following year, travelling through Turkey and Syria to reach her eventual destination of Mosul in Iraq.

Recruited in mid-2015 to the group's self-styled hisbah morality police, she patrolled city parks in IS-occupied Fallujah and Mosul.

Armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, a pistol and an explosives vest, her task was to ensure strict IS rules on dress code, public behaviour and bans on alcohol and tobacco.

In January 2016, she visited the German embassy in Ankara to apply for new identity papers. When she left the mission, she was arrested and extradited days later to Germany.

Wenisch's trial, which began in April 2019, is one of the first examples of court proceedings over the Islamic State group's brutal treatment of Yazidis.

A Kurdish-speaking group hailing from northern Iraq, the Yazidis were specifically targeted and oppressed by the jihadists beginning in 2015.

Prominent London-based human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who has been involved in a campaign for IS crimes against the Yazidi to be recognised as a 'genocide', was part of the team representing the Yazidi girl's mother.

Germany has charged several German and foreign nationals with war crimes and crimes against humanity carried out abroad, using the legal principle of universal jurisdiction which allows crimes to be prosecuted even if they were committed in a foreign country.

A handful of female suspects are among those who have appeared in the dock.

In November 2020, a German woman named as Nurten J. was charged with crimes against humanity allegedly committed while she was living in Syria as a member of Islamic State.

In October 2020, another German court sentenced the German-Tunisian wife of a rapper-turned-jihadist to three-and-a-half years in prison for having taken part in the enslavement of a Yazidi girl in Syria.

I'm sure that counts as sexual assault or rape.

US issues first gender-neutral 'X' passport

The United States has issued its first gender-neutral passport.

The document has an "X" in the gender box, signalling that the holder does not identify as either male or female.

It was issued to Dana Zzyym, a 66-year-old intersex activist, who sued the State Department over the issue in 2015.

The US Navy veteran said it was "an exciting moment for me" after getting the new passport. "I get to go places and say 'yes, this is who I am'."

Zzyym, who identifies as non-binary, was previously denied a passport after failing to mark male or female in an application.

Before getting the new passport, Zzyym said "it felt like I was in prison".

"You're denied a status of being human and it's like I was not a citizen of this country because I was denied access to leave and only felons and prisoners are not allowed to travel."

Before, people needed medical certification to mark their gender as different from the one on their birth certificate.

More than 10 countries, including Canada, Germany, Australia and India, already offer a third gender on documents.

The State Department already allows people to self-select male or female on their passport, and says it plans to make the option of a third gender widely available.

"I want to reiterate, on the occasion of this passport issuance, the Department of State's commitment to promoting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people - including LGBTQI+ persons," said spokesman Ned Price.

The move, which gives choice to nonbinary, intersex and gender-nonconforming US citizens, is the latest move in President Joe Biden's LGBT agenda.

The president appointed a special envoy, Jessica Stern, to advance LGBT human rights around the world.

Ms Stern said the new gender designation should reduce the "dehumanising harassment and mistreatment that so often happens at border crossings when a person's legal documentation does not correspond with their gender expression".

“After so many years my sexual drive is increased seeing him. I am soooo much happy.

“I don’t want to leave this guy, but I have to marry my boyfriend as I have promised him. He is very sentimental person. If I leave him, he will definitely harm himself. I don’t know what to do.

“My father is a very intelligent person. He wants me to marry my boyfriend. He convinced me you will happy with him because he loves you.

“He is no doubt a good guy. His salary scale is low. He doesn’t have his own house in the city. I have to spend all my life in a rental house. I hate this.”

Indian Girl confesses Cheating on 'Not Good Looking' Boyfriend - post

The post received a lot of attention and naturally, many people criticised the Indian girl’s actions, saying that her boyfriend deserves better.

Others called her a golddigger who is more interested in materialistic items.

One person wrote:

“Don’t spoil his life. Just inform him, it’s better to harm now than later. You’re such a b****.”

Another posted: “Pls leave that good person. He deserves better. Tell him you cheated and break up. Pls don’t hurt him more by stating he is not attractive.”

Some users advised the Indian girl to tell her boyfriend as it will ruin her life if she gets married to someone she doesn’t love as well as his.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
