pakhimpur.jpgAccording to District Domestic Product data released by the Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Economics & Statistics, the district contributed Rs 12,414.40 crore — 3.38 per cent — of the state's Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sector GDP of Rs 3,66,727.16 crore in 2019-20.

Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people including four farmers were killed after Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s cavalcade hit protesting farmers and clashes erupted on Sunday, is the largest of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh in terms of area, and contributes the most to the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the state.

Lakhimpur Kheri is also home to the largest Sikh population in the state. The 7,680-sq-kilometre (2,970-sq-mile) district in the central part of the state shares a border with Nepal, and comes under the Lucknow administrative division. It is home to UP’s only national park, Dudhwa.

Leader in farm GDP

According to District Domestic Product data released by the Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Economics & Statistics, the district contributed Rs 12,414.40 crore — 3.38 per cent — of the state’s Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sector GDP of Rs 3,66,727.16 crore in 2019-20.

That year, the share of the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sector in the District Domestic Product of Lakhimpur was 45.30 per cent, higher than that of Uttar Pradesh as a whole (23.7 per cent) and India (18.4 per cent).

This indicates that the economy of the district is based mainly on agricultural activities, and crop production and animal husbandry is the main source of income of the people.

Largest Sikh population

Lakhimpur Kheri is home to the largest concentration of Sikhs among all the districts of Uttar Pradesh. According to Census 2011, of the state’s total 6,43,500 Sikh population, 94,388 — or 15 per cent — were living in Lakhimpur Kheri.

While the share of Sikhs in the state’s population was just 0.32 per cent, it was 3.24 per cent in Lakhimpur — there were 6.43 lakh Sikhs in the district’s total population of 40.21 lakh.

‘I Was Told to Stop Financing Farmers' Langar’, Says Prominent PIO Deported from Delhi Airport

Darshan Singh Dhaliwal was sent back to the US after immigration officials asked him repeatedly why he had set up a langar and who was funding it.

‘I Was Told to Stop Financing Farmers' Langar’, Says Prominent PIO Deported from Delhi Airport

Jalandhar: Days after he was deported from Delhi airport, US-based billionaire Darshan Singh Dhaliwal  said that he had been specifically targeted by immigration officials ever since he began funding a langar at the farmers’ protest site in Singhu, on January 6, 2021.

Every time he landed India this year, said Dhaliwal, immigration officials at the airport would repeatedly question him on why he organised the langar and who paid for it before letting him through.

But last week, Dhaliwal – who is a US national and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) – found his passage to India barred.

Dhaliwal, who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin , arrived in India on a Chicago-Delhi direct flight at 6.30 pm on October 23-24 to attend his niece’s wedding. But he was denied permission to enter by the immigration authorities who allegedly cited the same Singhu border langar for farmers as the reason. Dhaliwal told The Wire by telephone on Friday that he was told to stop organising such langars if he wanted to enter India again.

Dhaliwal along with his wife Debra, who is from the Netherlands, waited at the airport for around five hours only to be sent back to the US on the same flight.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
